Title: Nathaniel Badger c.1816, Sedgley - parents and beyond.
Post by: Emsworthy on Friday 14 July 17 20:54 BST (UK)
Hi,

I've managed to trace the Badger line back to Nathaniel Badger, b.c. 1816, Sedgley.  I have a thread on the Northamptonshire board, following his son, Nathaniel. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=774935.0 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=774935.0)

I have Nathaniel's (1816) father as Joseph Badger, from his marriage to Sarah Marsh (nee Wasdell) on 11th January 1841 in Sedgley.

Can anyone get any further with Nathaniel and his parents/siblings?

Many thanks,

Emma ;)

I can find the following children born to Joseph Badger and Jane in Sedgley but no Nathaniel.

David bapt 1818
Adam bapt. 1818
Sarah bapt. 1821
Joseph bapt. 1824
Sophia bapt 1826

The only marriage I can see for a Joseph Badger to a Jane is

Joseph Badger/Jane Sort St Matthew, Walsall 6 July 1814

Thank you for your reply.

It is certainly a good match, but once again, Nathaniel is elusive!  It's happening with all the Nathaniels through the generations... ::)

Will try my best to fit these guys in. :)

Hello
Sorry but I'm finding this one confusing.
There's a Nathaniel Badger widower  marrying an Ann Marsh 5.11.1827 at Sedgley
A burial for Nathaniel Badger  23 Jan 1850 at Sedgley and a Chelsea pension for this man ceasing at the same time. His records say he left service 1826.
But turns out according to the Gro new index he's 63 so born 1787.

Joseph and Jane have another daughter Ann baptised Sedgley 12.2.1804 buried 8.12.1805  and Joseph is described as a nailor. The 1818 baptisms give an address of Lower Gornal and nailor.
Another daughter Nancy age 2 is buried 21.11.1814,son Joseph  5 days 20.2.1816

So there are other children, perhaps the couple are going to one of the non-conformist chapels in the area. There are quite a few-try the Sedgley Manor website.
As for a marriage there is a Joseph Badger and Jane Charles 4.7.1803 at Halesowen.

Looks like Joseph born c 1783

Thanks for the information, Ciderdrinker.  It's fascinating stuff.  I'm struggling to keep up with it all myself, if I'm honest!  The 'nailor' profession is interesting.

Nathaniel Badger's wife was married previously.  The witnesses at the wedding were as follows:

MARRIAGE;
29 July 1829, St John the Baptist, Kingsbury, Northamptonshire
Edward MARSH, Bachelor, to Sarah WASDELL, Spinster
Witnesses, Zachariah and Annamenta Badger
(FreeREG)

Now, I can't link Nathaniel and Zachariah together (yet), but there must be a link somewhere.  Zachariah is listed here: http://watfordvillage.weebly.com/gypsies.html (http://watfordvillage.weebly.com/gypsies.html)
"recorded as travelling Gypsies and hawkers of nails."

It gets more and more cloudy...

The above marriage was at Kingsthorpe not Kingsbury.
I think that Annamenta is actually Cinnamenta

Hi
Now that Zachatiah and Cinnameta strike a bell!
Also at Sedgley in the 1820's/30's
Zachariah and Cinnameta having children .
Samuel 13.11.1831 son of Zachariah and Sinameta nailor Upper Gornal
Edward 9.12.1832 son of Zavahriah and Cinamenta nailor Upper Gornal

They married in Northampton at Kings Cliffe /Kingsthorpe 30.3.1829 Cinnamenta Smith wit William and S Seal.

So definitely from Sedgley and the same family.
There are at least two other Zachariah's at Sedgley -Zachariah junior 1782-30.1.1822 and senior 1756-15.6.1827.

So possibly Zachariah senior had his wife Mary Baker married 15.11.1773 at Sedgley (wit John Hunt and William Aston), had sons Zachariah junior 29.12 1782 Kingswinford ,Nathaniel 1787 and JOSEPH  1783 .(there's a baptism also at Kingswinford 13.2.1774)
Joseph had sons Nathaniel and Zachariah.

But that's getting ahead or ourselves -we need a baptism for Nathanial in 1816 ish

ps Another connection with the Marsh family
Dudley King Street Methodist chapel
Mary Ann Marsh daughter of William of Gornal nailor  and and his wife Elizabeth Marsh daughter of Joseph and Jane Badger born 20.1.1833 baptized 3.11.1833.
Marriage 7.11.1831 at Sedgley

Ciderdrinker, you're good!

I am loving looking at these people. Have never researched any gypsy families before. Imagining what their lives were like.

Hope we can make a link, to tie them all together!

Two more children for Zachariah & Cinamenta in Watford, Northamptonshire:
Mathew 1834, and John 1838

and Zachariah is described as "a travelling gypsey hawking nails"

OK, so...jumping back a generation...

Nathaniel's dad Joseph.  Can anyone tie him in with any siblings?

There is a David Badger c.1789
Nathaniel Badger c.1787 (but apparently born in Scotland, according to Chelsea pensioner record)
Nathaniel Badger c. 1771 born Sedgley, Staffs.

Hi - Zachariah and Cinnamenta Badger were (I am pretty certain) my great great great grandparents. They had, amongst others, a child named Mathew Badger (my great great granddad). He died aged 33, the year his son Edward Badger was born (1867). Edward badger moved to Southam and married Jane Ellard Bicknell and they had two daughter. Kathleen Alice Badger (born 1912), my grandmother, and her sister Gladys Mary Badger. She used to talk of her Romany gypsy background so I think you have the right family. I don't know much else I'm afraid as I have only recently started researching my family history.
