Title: Robert Henry Griffiths
Post by: DeborahC on Sunday 16 July 17 10:44 BST (UK)
Hi,

Just looking for some advice. Can't seem to find a birth entry for my G G Grandfather Robert Henry Griffiths. On all census records, military record and marriage it states birth abt 1874 in Swansea. But I can't find anything to confirm.  On the marriage cert it states his father as Robert Griffiths and deceased - this was 1896. He lived mainly in Pontypridd but also Pontypool and Maerdy. He died in 1933 Llwynypia Hospital.   Any advice where to look next greatly received!

Thanks

Deborah

It is possible that his birth was never registered, the registration system was tightened up in the late 1870's

Have you any idea of his mothers name, did he have siblings whose births were registered

Hi,

Unfortunately I have little information about him, no known siblings or Mothers surname. Only his Father's.

Thanks for responding.

Could you please show us where you have him on census - who did he marry

Is this the marriage in 1895

Marriages Sep 1895
Griffiths    Robert Henry
Williams    Margaret Jane
Pontypridd    11a   757

It might seem strange to you when you are after a birth registration that I am asking about census /marriage but sometimes this information does help us track down people.

His Militia attestation states SWB 3rd Battalion Dec 1892.

Thank you for your help - I never question what I'm asked still very much a novice!   :)

There is a Robert Griffiths Dec 1894 Swansea Vol 11A page 971 mother's maiden name Holmes

He may have acquired the 'Henry' after registration, have you found any 'Holmes' visitors on census?

Good luck

Hi Deb,

If he died in Llwynypia hospital that would be the Rhondda area. He is not buried in a near local cem (Trealaw) try contact library at Pontypridd or Aberdare (Google for info) to see if burial record is within local area. They are very helpful. Pontypridd reg district covered a large area.

Hi

LLwynypia is in Rhondda Fawr( Big) Maerdy is in Rhondda Fach (small)  There is a cemetary close by called Penrhys  close to  Ystrad Rhondda or it could be Treorchy Cemetary at the top of the Rhondda Valley

Hi,

Going by the attestation info, Robert states he is 19yr 1 month old at end December 1892 and gives a birth year of 1873.

This may be a complete red herring, but the only one to come up Dec Q 1873 with names Robert Henry is this one. As mentioned he may not have been registered.

BYRON, ROBERT  HENRY  Mmn     GRIFFITHS
GRO Reference: 1873  D Quarter in SWANSEA  Volume 11A  Page 669

Not finding a Byron/Griffiths marriage for parents, death or census for the above, within area or timeframe.

Just a thought for the maybe list. Not a lot with surname Byron in Swansea or surrounding area.

Who were the witness on marriage cert and what was his address? It may help.

Cas

if this is Robert senior's death reg, he was recently deceased  at the time of the marriage

Robert Griffiths 50 sept qtr 1895 Pontypridd vol 11a pg 280

Possible marriage
Robert Griffiths march qtr 1875 Aberystwyth vol 11b pg 77 with Sarah Howells on the same page

But if this is family, why does Robert Henry say he was born in Swansea if he was born in Cardiganshire?

Hi

I finally got around to ordering Robert's birth certificate - to explore the Byron possibility. It states his dob as 23/11/1873 which matches up with his attestation. His mother is named as Margaret Byron nee Griffiths and father George Byron.  They lived at 20 well street Swansea.
Problem is I can't find any other records to prove this theory, only one I can find is a poor/work house entry for a George   Byron on his own dob 1828 from Well Street. Would you recommend any other avenue to explore? I cannot find any of them on the 1881 census, no marriage etc. There is a Margaret Daniels detailed on Roberts marriage certificate  but I can't find a link.

Thanks in advance!

Possible Long shot..was Robert Henry raised by his uncle? Cannot find a birth reg in Aberystwyth to match 1881 census where he is named as son, found by Osprey.   MELIN-DWR., a township in Llanbadarn-fawr parish, Cardigan; on the river Rheidol, near Aberystwyth.

Possible 1851 census
Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire, Wales
Registration District   Aberystwyth
Residence   High Street
HO107 Piece/Folio 2485 / 283 pg 20

Margaret Griffiths   Head   F   47   Llangawsai, Cardiganshire
Thomas Griffiths   Son   M   25   Llangawsai, Cardiganshire
John Griffiths   Son   M   23   Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire
William Griffiths   Son   M   22   Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire
Mary Griffiths   Daughter   F   20   Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire
Jane Griffiths   Daughter   F   15   Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire
Margaret Griffiths   Daughter   F   6   Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire ******
Robert Griffiths   Son   M   4   Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire  ******
Richard E Griffiths   Son   M   2   Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire
Plus 2 servants

The birth reg in Swansea for Robert H Byron could possibly be the correct one, considering birth dates match up. Maybe he was raised by Margarets' brother? Just a thought...

This is possibly Robert senior who died 1895, I would contact Pontypridd Library and ask for a copy of the internment, via email if not in area, to see if correct and gleen more info, possible address or if any other family in same plot etc.

They have a very good family history reference library and from experience are very helpful.

Update - well it seems you guys were spot on. Thank you so much! I explored the death of Robert Griffiths 1895 in Pontypridd and the address on the death cert was the same address on Robert Henry Griffith's marriage cert. Hoorah! I can also see Robert Griffiths (senior) and Sarah on the census in Pontypridd in 1891.
I have found a marriage for Robert & Sarah in 1875 in Aberystwyth which proves that Robert Henry was either adopted by them, born out of wedlock or has a different parent(s) as he was born in 1873.
I have found a possible family link in Aberystwyth Llanbadarn Fawr, Robert Snr did have a sister Margaret a few years older than himself. But I am finding it hard to prove a link between Maragret/Swansea/George Byron. which would tie everything up.
Does anyone have any ideas where I could turn next please?

Thank you in advance.
