Title: Tracing Scottish Immigrants - Daniel Wright and Jane Taylor Wright née McFadzen
Post by: angus75 on Tuesday 18 July 17 09:56 BST (UK)
Hi

I am hoping for some pointers in tracking an distant relative of mine, Daniel Wright, and his wife Jane, who emigrated to Australia in 1920. He would have been my great great uncle and is the only one of a group of siblings that I haven't been able to trace.

Some background on them both, first of all...

Daniel Wright, b1881 in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, Scotland to parents Samuel Wright and Jane Mathers. He married Jane Taylor McFadzen (sometimes transcribed as McFadyen) on 23 July 1909 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland and they lived in Grangemouth where it seems he owned some property. Jane (also known as Jean) was born in 1885 in Dundee to parents John McFadzen and Ann Bruce.

Daniel and Jean Taylor Wright are listed on the passenger manifest (accessed via Ancestry) for the P&O ship Berrima leaving London on 24 March 1920 heading to Australia with Australia listed as "country of intended future permanent residence". Daniel's occupation is listed as Stevedore. I think they may have landed in Melbourne. Interestingly, I couldn't find them via the NAA RecordSearch look-up however.

This is the last record I can find of them and I'm curious to know what happened next! Any tips on how to research this. I have tried every trick I know on Ancestry to search for them, but no luck.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

Angus

Here is the house - the one with the red Jeep out front - at the address given in their death notices. Looking at the design and the colour of the bricks I'd say that it is the home they lived in.

You need to hit the left arrow.

I'll bet the residents of that street were happy about the monstrosity they are building next door.  ::)

Were there children listed with them on the passenger list?

Jamjar

No, none listed, and no record of any births in Scotland. Given they'd been married 11 years prior to emigrating and their ages, I'm assuming that it's unlikely that children suddenly appeared on the scene once they arrived in Australia (and no children are named in the death notices unearthed above). I had been hoping to unearth an Australian branch of cousins, but I think this is unlikely!

That's a pity.

I wondered if they had relatives out here that they had come to.

Getting Jane's death certificate would be the way to go. Our certs are very detailed and any children should be listed.

Hopefully the probate packets will contain the death certificates.

A probate packet  *should* contain a death cert, will, list of heirs with full names and locations and list of assets and debts.  Occasionally they contain other certs such as marriage or death of spouse etc.

Dear all,

Thank you so much for the time spent and (and very fast response) in solving my question - I now have an idea of what happened to Daniel and Jane, who both died in Australia without children. There is a still a slight mystery as to why they would have moved to Australia - there are not obvious relations on Daniel's side who had previously emigrated, but perhaps there are on Jane's side.

Special thanks to Ros (@rosball) who went above and beyond to photograph the probate package for both.

Given that it's only about 24h since I asked the original question, I think this is all very impressive! Well done Rootschat community!  :)

best wishes

Angus

Hi Jamjar,

Yes, the estate went to a niece, one of his sister's daughters back in Scotland.
