Would anyone be able to do a lookup for me in Electoral Rolls for NSW between 1929&1932 ?
It's a long shot but I'd really love to know where my Grandparents lived in Australia so that I could visit next time I'm in Australia.
My Grandparents were married at St.James Church in Sydney in 1932 but no street address is given on the marriage certificate.
My Mum was born in Corrimalon19/1/1932 but I don't have a copy of her birth certificate and ( due to the 100 year rule) don't think that anyone would be able to look that up for me.
If any help my Grandfather was from South Wales and my Grandmother Mary was from Hamilton in Scotland ( maiden name Archibald)
-
1930 ER
William James THOMAS 44 Judd St Rockdale, coppersmith
Mary Agnes THOMAS 44 Judd St Rockdale, home duties
Does this sound like the correct couple?
Ros
There are about a dozen William James THOMAS on 1930 electoral roll in NSW. What was his occupation?
-
Thank you so much -I'm not certain that this is the right couple as there is no record of my Grandmother's second name being Agnes.
On the Marriage certificate I have from 5/7/30 my Grandfather is listed as a Fitter.
-
By the way I notice you are interested in the Kerr family from Scotland -my Great Grandmother ( Mother of Mary Thomas) was Christina Kerr so there may be a connection there 😀
-
I've been browsing through 1931, 32 ER and can't see any living near Corrimal or living with a Mary (apart from the above couple). Of course Mary may not have updated her status/name.
Still looking ...
-
Thank you so much for this -I can't tell you how much it would mean to me to be able to visit where my Mum was born .
My Mum sadly never got the chance to go back to Australia after she left in 1934 and very sadly died in 1993.
I went to St.James church when I was in Sydney in2014 and climbed the bridge in memory of my lovely Mum in 2011.
Another visit is definitely happening soon.
-
That sounds lovely - let's hope we can find something.
I did search trove for a marriage and birth announcement without success.
-
Exmouth,
Do you know the names of the parents of either of your grandparents?
(I see Christina for your Grandmother's mother)
If they died before 1987, we may be able to locate the couple through death records and work backwards to where they lived.
Sue
-
Exmouth,
If you have a look around the internet you will see that coppersmith and fitter are a connected trade.
I would not dismiss the couple Ros has found.
Sue

I've just been checking on the requirements to order a birth certificate for a birth less than a 100 years ago. They don't make it easy - understandably.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/Pages/births/birth-certificate.aspx#Who_can_apply
It doesn't seem to cover your circumstances but maybe you could enquire.
-
On 1935 ER
William James THOMAS and Mary Agnes THOMAS are still on electoral roll at 44 Judd St, Rockdale
(quite possible that they didn't notify electoral commission of leaving )
BUT also at this address is
Victor Crawford THOMAS, 44 Judd St, Rockdale, linotype operator
George Joseph THOMAS, 44 Judd St, Rockdale, compositor

No I'm not dismissing that one at all 😀My Grandfather was an amateur boxer from Bargoed in South Wales and he came to Australia initially for a boxing tour met my Grandmother ( who came on an assisted passage as a domestic servant) on the ship and they married 2 years later.
My Great Grandparents were not from Australia.

Exmouth answered your question Sue - they didn't live in Australia :)
Sorry Sue :)
1931-32 ER - all possibilities
William James THOMAS 15 Bent St Lithgow, laundryman
Mary Jane THOMAS 15 Bent St Lithgow, home duties
William James THOMAS, Violet Hill, Tea Gardens, dairyman
William James THOMAS, 80 Garfield St, Five Dock. shop assistant
William James THOMAS, Inverell, labourer
William James THOMAS Henry St, Werris Creek fireman
William James THOMAS, Borah Creek, Bingara, labourer
William James THOMAS, 76 Thomson St, Darlinghurst West, mechanic
William James THOMAS, Murray St, Abernethy, labourer
William James THOMAS, 64 Parramatta Rd, Summer Hill, telephone sup
And the Rockdale couple
Ros
adding : I suspect that they didn't enrol to vote Exmouth :(

Bexley is a suburb next to Rockdale:

24960/1963 William James THOMAS parents GEORGE JOSEPH and ELIZABETH ROCKDALE

So, if Mary's mother was Christina, then this isn't the correct Mary.

May I suggest you consider contacting NSW State Library re the electoral rolls, as their holdings far exceed those that the commercial family history websites have currently uploaded.
NSW State Library : http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/research-and-collections/ask-librarian
Re the NSW marriage certificate... May I ask when the document you are looking at was actually issued ... You see, the details the NSW BDM may have released when issuing certified copies in say the 1970s, 1980s, may not have included 'all' the available details. However, it is also possible that the clergy when marrying the couple only asked them for the name of the town/locality. In any case, what about other information that is on the document ... perhaps you could type it up, including the names of their witnesses ... searching for them may help the quest...
Have you checked through the Sands Directories for NSW ... free to search via the uploaded digitised images available via the City of Sydney's archives.

Exmouth, on your previous thread you state that: "Both Father's names and occupations are listed however although no occupation is listed for either William or Mary".
So you know that Mary's were Christina and ?
What is the name of William's father?
I believe that you should be able to get your mother's certificate by supplying your mother's death cert, your birth cert and your parents marriage certificate.
Jamjar
-
Yes, I also understand that it should be possible to obtain a NSW birth certificate from the restricted period if you can demonstrate your relationship to the deceased as outlined by Jamjar.

8)Cando the certificate I have for William & Mary's marriage
on 5th August 1930 matches the reference number you've attached but it doesn't include addresses for them.
It merely states that William's usual place of residence is Sydney
and Mary's is Balgownie.
Both Father's names and occupations are listed however although no occupation is listed for either William or Mary.

Oh wow the record for Caroline Archibald is definitely the right person -my Grandmother's sister Euphemia lived in Australia and died I think in about 1980 and all the other names fit as well.
I'll check passenger lists now to see when they travelled from Scotland to Australia.
The Mary Thomas mentioned could also possibly be my Grandmother as she did shop work in Scotland prior to moving to Australia.
I need to now get a copy of my Mum's birth certificate I think and will then possibly get a street address although I was told by the Records office that it's not certain that it will be included.
Thank you all so much for all your help 😀

So, is it correct that Mary's parents were George and Christina?
What was the name of William's father, as per marriage transcript?

William's Father was James Lloyd Thomas -I agree that it would be likely that Mary had a second name but it's not stated on either her birth, marriage or death certificate.

Thanks for all this information-yes that's the Bill Renwick as I know he married Myrtle Vallis and she subsequently remarried.
Their daughter Rhonda runs the Latrobe Valley bus company and the Kindred Spirits foundation.
James Lloyd Thomas wasn't in Australia it was only Mary's family who emigrated.
The Thomas family remained in South Wales -my Grandparents and my Mum returned to Wales in1934 and my Mum grew up there.
My Mum's brother Billy Thomas was lauded Rugby for Wales and the Barbarians in the 1960's/70's and came on a tour to Australia.
I'm now looking at passenger lists to see whether George Archibald did actually return to Scotland after Carolinedied

In 1937 in the local newspaper servicing Balgownie NSW
South Coast Times 15 Jan 1937
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/142674704
IN MEMORIAM
ARCHIBALD
In loving memory of my dear wife and our mother, Caroline Waller, died 16th Jan. 1932
This is a day of sad regrets. One we’ll remember and never forget
Dear is there grave, where she is laid. Sweet is the memory that will never fade.
Inserted by her loving husband and daughter, Phemia.
Not just to-day but everyday,
In silence we remember,
By her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Billy Thomas.
Can you please confirm the names of all of the children of Caroline Waller ARCHIBALD.
Can you please confirm when Mary and Billy returned to Wales. The 1931 supplementary roll showing Mary as Mary THOMAS, School lane, Balgownie would cover 'new' enrolments, and as she had recently married, her 'new' enrolment would reflect her change of surname to that of her husband. May I speculate that is possible that he was unable to reside there with his wife and in-laws permanently due to the lack of regular employment (Great Depression) and without a 'fixed' address he would not be in a position to qualify to enrol. Many men became itinerant at that time, some tramped across the country. One of my rellies tramped from Newcastle NSW to Far North Queensland, seeking work. This was not considered unusual.

Hello Ros and JM
The fight reports listed for Billy Thomas are all correct; that is the Billy Thomas in question.
However, the meeting between Kayo Morgan, the American bantam-weight ….. and ‘Darkie’ Billy Thomas of Wales …. Thomas who will be making his initial appearance in Scotland, … is for a different Billy Thomas - we have had a few boxers named 'Billy Thomas' in Wales sometimes the nickname is the only way to identify the correct one.
With regards to the Billy Thomas in this topic he was nicknamed Farlap by his 'Australian' supporters due to his speed in the ring; 'Welsh Wizard' is another but never known as 'Darkie'. Aside from that Billy's match with Jim Winters at Glasgow, on January 27 1934 was his initial appearance in Scotland.

Just looking again at Alex ARCHIBALD who was with the family in School Lane as mentioned.
So...... he was not the one of the name who died in 1947 ;D
But I think he was another brother to Mary.
The Electoral Roll shows Alexander ARCHIBALD at Balgownie to 1937 where he lived with George ARCHIBALD and two named Thomas ARCHIBALD at Brokers Road. All are miners.
I am uncertain of a sighting between this time and 1943 , but in 1943 he is listed with Thomas ARCHIBALD and his wife Margaret Baird ARCHIBALD (HD). His occupation is grinder while Thomas is a gardener. Address Isis Street Parramatta.

Thanks for all the information.
Roy -I have a record of my Grandfather Billy Thomas travelling on the Orsova to Australia in 1929.
Does anyone have any more information about "Slam Sullivan"?also would there have been accommodation at the gym for them?
I'm interested because my son lived at one time in Freo and I think this building was nearby.

Re the name of Slam's Gymnasium. In 1909 & 1910 Slam worked at the Barry Dock 'Wonderlands' Gymnasium Club at 25 Holton Rd, Barry Dock. When he came to Australia he had a gymnasium at 'Newstead House' 229 Castlereagh Street Sydney and also at Uncle Bill Calnan's Gymnasium at 29A Flinders Street Darlinghurst, Sydney. His business card reads: "The only training quarters in Australia where both Business Men and Boxers are catered for under the personal supervision of Slam Sullivan." He also trained boxers at his own house at 50 Annette Street Oatley, in the Sydney suburbs, where he had a large room set up for training. His block of land was a waterfront to Oatley Bay and here he had a boxing ring built for training matches.

Hi Exmouth,
Were you able to get hold of your Mum's birth certificate and did it give you the information you wanted? It sounds such a lovely idea and I do hope you find out where she was born.
Incidentally I have sent you a pm with links to the probate records - there were quite a few death, marriage and birth records attached to those. To see your personal message just click on My Messages in the brown banner at the top of the page.
