Title: SKIPWITH family (Kimpton, St Albans)
Post by: sdbadger on Tuesday 18 July 17 20:08 BST (UK)
Hello:

Researching a 13th-g-grandmother, Joan SKIPWITH (said to be 1474-1518) Kimpton, Herts. She married Robert BARLEY/BARLYE (said to be 1470-1534).

I've found reference to her being the daughter of William and Agnes (Constable) SKIPWITH but nothing is sourced. Too, they are of Lincolnshire.  Dates for William and Agnes vary widely but seem, in most cases, to be too early to be likely parents of Joan.

Any information about SKIPWORTH of Hertfordshire 1400s-1500s will be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

"Lincolnshire Pedigrees Vol.3, p. 895 - Harleian Society Vol. 52 -available online" shows Sir William Skipwith, Knt. (d. 27 Nov. 1482) married to Agnes, dau. of Sir John Constable, Knt., of Burton Constable,
co. York ; widow of Thomas St. Quintin. 2nd wife with 3 children :
1. Sir John Skipwith, Knt., of South Ormsby; High Sheriff of co. Lincoln 1493 ; made a Knight-Banneret at Blackheath 1497.
2. Alice, mar. Sir John Markham, Knt.
3. Joan.

Thanks, brad!

Yes, I've seen many trees that have William and Agnes as Joan's parents. I find it hard to believe and have yet to see any proof for that allegation.  That they are in Lincolnshire and Joan is to be of St Albans or Kimpton just doesn't jibe. But I'll look further!

There were SKIPWORTHs in Herts but I can find little about them; that was the point of my inquiry.

Cheers!

According to this link Joan was the daughter of William Skipwith (d1509 St Albans) & Joan Baldock.

The 1509 will is held at Hertfordshire Records Office.

Thanks very much!

Just earlier today I located two sites that list William and Joan (Baldock) SKIPWITH as parents of Joan (and several others). Both sites have been very helpful and I've been working with the info (wills, etc.) there and forgot to mention the discovery here.  :o

MANY thanks Jomot and brad!

There are some wills of Skipwith of St Albans:

1464 Peter Skypwyth, buried Codicote
1477/8 John Skypwyth, of St Albans
1509 William Skypwith, of St Albans
1522 George Skipwith, gent, of St Albans
1528 John Skypwyth, of St Albans

These are some details from the will of John Skypwyth, 1477, from "St Albans Wills 1471-1500" edited by Susan Flood:

To be buried in St Peter where my wife is buried
To my sons William and John Skypwyth whom I appoint executors
To my wife Katherine, for her life, my tenement in St Peters Street
After her death the tenement to my son John Skypwyth

Also, here is an entry for a lawsuit in Hilary term (Jan-Feb) 1510 in Common Pleas.

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/AALT2/H8/CP40no990/aCP40no990fronts/IMG_0392.htm
Third entry:
Herts. George Skipwith, executor of William Skipwith, esq, versus John Carver, of Sondon, Beds, yeoman; Thomas Lambard, of Walden, Essex, gent; Thomas Waldon, of St Albans, butcher, for debt.

George, as executor, would probably be William's son. These wills are at Hertford.

Thanks SO much, Vance!

From the early research I've done on the two sites I mentioned, I have John and Ellen (Godfrey) SKIPWITH as parents of William. This jibes with your Wills info, Vance!  ;D

You've all been very helpful and I very much appreciate your interest and information!  Thanks so much!

Here's an earlier entry in Common Pleas for John Skypwyth.

Hilary term 1465, second to last entry:
London. John Skypwyth, of St Albans, Herts, gentleman, versus Alexander Brewester, of London, sergeant; and Elizabeth his wife, alias Elizabeth Brewester, sole merchant, for a debt of 30 pounds.

You mentioned Kimpton, about five miles north of St Albans. Here are two places, Caldicote and St Paul's Walden, which are within a mile or two of Kimpton.

If you go to the HALS site:

https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/services/Libraries-and-archives/Hertfordshire-Archives-and-Local-Studies/Hertfordshire-Archives-and-Local-Studies.aspx

And Search Hertfordshire Names Online for surname Skypwyth, you will find a will for:

Peter Skypwyth, 1464, who requested to be buried at Codicote.

Codicote is about a mile east of Kimpton.

And here is an earlier Common Pleas record with John Skypwyth. He is not identified further, but this is probably the same person from St Albans:

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/AALT1/H6/CP40no748/aCP40no748fronts/IMG_0147.htm
Hilary 1448, second entry:
Herts. John Skypwyth versus John Theyne, of Rugge/Ridge, husbandman; John Sampson, of Tydenhangre/Tyttenhanger, dyer; John Smyth, of Walden Abbots/St Paul’s Walden, husbandman. Debt.

Ridge and Tyttenhanger are both near St Albans; St Paul's Walden is about two miles north of Kimpton.

You can order copies of wills from HALS. In 1464 it will probably be in Latin and not very easy to read, but if you post an image or link here, there are people who can help decipher it.

Wills at that time might be uninformative. Often they include several religious bequests and not much more, but it might be worth a look.

Thanks very much, Vance! You're a font of information and I very much appreciate it!

Was trying to locate the will of John SKIPWITH (1477/8) previously mentioned and have had no luck either at Herts or National Archives....

Appreciate your information and will get to work on it.

Cheers!
