Title: marriage in loftus - any records?
Post by: chwiliwr on Friday 21 July 17 12:32 BST (UK)
Can anyone with access to parish records in Yorkshire help me trace a marriage in 1917? According to a military form I have seen Lawrence Sheppard married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Owen or Owens in Loftus Parish Church on 26 September 1917.
However various members of the family have failed to find any other evidence of this marriage over a number of years. I am beginning to doubt whether they were actually married although other incidents in Elizabeth's life point strongly to her being married.
I have found a record of their first born daughter registered in Guisborough district in the June quarter of 1918 on freebmd but the marriage has drawn a blank.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance in solving a family mystery.

Loftus Parish Registers are in Teeside Archives.

PRs on microfilm are now held in the Reference library in Victoria Square, Middlesbrough (close to MIMA), removed from the Archives in Exchange Square (though the Archives do have some on CD). Not sure if the Ref librarian will do copies of entries, phone number is 01642 729001.

Thank you KGerrard. I must have tried every variation of the surname except that one. And thank you tillypeg for the address and phone number. I'll try phoning as I am a long way from Yorkshire. If the librarian can't oblige I'll make a request on Rootschat for some kind soul in the area to help by getting information from the registers.
