I have a photo of five brothers in uniform that went away to war. Sadly a brother never came home and died 21/04/1917 at Feuchy Chapel, Wancourt.
His name was James Telfer.
The other brothers all came home, we think.
William Telfer, George Telfer, John Telfer and Adam Telfer. All from Jedburgh.
James we know was with KOSB but we haven't any clue about the others.
I do have a photo with them all in uniform but at the moment cannot attach it.
Any help much appreciated.

Hi...the file size for attaching photos needs to be just below 500kbs. It's helpful if you know the dates of birth of the Brothers too.

Only James was killed in WW1. The other men survive.
-
There are two Adams listed here:
http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1
The photo would help to identify which regiment they were in.
Oh ok..I thought you weren't sure.
At least you can eliminate those two from your enquiry.

' Adam Telfer, son of William Telfer, shepherd of Lomdairknowes,Jedburgh
reported to be shot through the head, killed instantly at Dardanelles, 12th July 1915'.
-
No we visited James's grave and knew of the four brothers coming home. Only James died in WW1.
The photo I have of the five brothers won't upload on here. And the uniforms aren't clear. I could maybe e-mail you them?
-
Wow that's very strange!! But that isn't this Adam as apparently he went onto have children and came back to Jedburgh (I think).
-
Adam Telfer who died in 1915 as reported by Hawick News, looks to be Adam Smith Telfer, son of another William Telfer, shepherd, whose wife is Aggie S Telfer. So two William Telfers who are shepherds ::)
1901 Scotland Census: :
Fairloans. Oxnam, Roxburghshire

That's this one:

The one I post in the earlier thread.

Are you getting an error message when you post...if so...what is it?
Carol
-
Thank you for all your help, this is a start which I can work on.
I wonder if that's the right John Telfer then??
-
Can you explain why you can't post the photo.
Carol
-
It wouldn't load....?
-
Did you get an error message and if so, what did it say?
See here for help to post a photo...you need to scroll down to see graphics of what to do:

-
It says it's too large?
-
Ok I have found out why! I need to scan it in apparently then reduce the size! Eek.... Will have to get myself to a library next week to use a scanner as I was taking the photograph trying to attach it.
Thanks for the help :-)
-
Just reduce it in size until it's just under 500Kb. there shouldn't be any need to re-scan.
Give it a unique name as all filenames are stored & you can't have 2 the same.

Hawick News 13th July 1917
'Telfer: Previously reported wounded and missing, now officially reported killed in action on 21st April, Private James Telfer, KOSB, age 24, fourth son of William and Helen Telfer, Langhaugh Walls, Bonchester Bridge, and late of Jardinefield, Jedburgh. Sadly missed.'
http://www.coldstreamhistorysociety.co.uk/index.php/war-memorials/profile/bonchester-bridge-hobkirk-james-telfer
This site also says that his brother George was killed on 25th April 1918, Belgium.
-
And yet on Army Register of Soldiers Effects, it says that George Telfer killed on 25th April 1918, his father is George. ???
-
It's strange isn't it? My mother in law had always thought that it was only James that was killed in action??
So frustrating to know the truth isn't it?
-
To add to the uncertainty about what's happened to George ::)
Hawick News and Border Chronicle 15 November 1918
Hawick Soldiers Who Have Made The Great Sacrifice:
Pte James Telfer, KOSB, son of William Telfer, Langhaugh Walls, Bonchester, age 24,
no sign of George on the list, and it's a big list!
-
Yep, cross information isn't it?
-
This is info on George's death - on other thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=775452.msg6290071#msg6290071
Feb 1958, Jedburgh
I've seen the death cert - correct parents, etc.

Thank you that's 4 brothers that have the date of deat now, just need John Telfer. Very very kind
-
This shoud help:
I think John married a Celia KYLE she was born c1883 in Bombay, India, the daughter of Alexander and Annie KYLE, sister Lilian KYLE born c1897 in Hampshire.
John Telfer and Celia KYLE married Apr-Jun 1909 in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire.
Celia died 1954 in Crowborough, Sussex.
I thought that Halliared said that John had survived Celia but can't see the ref now

Celia's probate definitely says that she was the wife of John Telfer and probate granted to John Telfer, jobbing gardener - soyou should be looking for a death after May 1954.
