I'm looking for information on Donald James Jones born 1918 in Stoke Newington London. I have what I believe to a small amount of information. I think he died in the '90s in Palmerston North.
He was the half brother of my father Robin John Thomson. His mother was Mabel Rose Meredith and his father Francis James Lockwood Jones born Dunedin Otago around 1896.
He sailed for New Zealand on the HMT Kigoma with his mother in 1919. I think his father may have been a seaman.
I'm particularly interested in any marriages or children.
Anything on Francis would be welcomed too.

Hello KiwiCockney
I will send you details of a possible marriage (and divorce) for the above Donald.
Because there is a cut-off date for publication of information about New Zealand Marriages in this forum (with the resource I'm using), it will be necessary to send this to you via the personal messaging system here.

Hi again KiwiCockney
I have now located further information for Donald J. JONES which, because of the recent death of a member of his family > and the fact that many people mentioned in the item, are still living, > I'd prefer to send the link to you in a personal message.
Can you please make another post to this thread ? (Just a smiley face or similar will do).
A total of three posts are needed by a newcomer, in order to open up the personal messaging system at your end. ;)

Hi Lu, thanks.
As you may have gathered Donald was my uncle. My dad's circumstances took him away from NZ and from his family at a very early age, he lied about his age and ran away to sea. I was recently "found" by some of my first cousins by Dad full / Donald's half sister. This has made me even more curious about Donald. My dad had spoken of him but not in much detail. Thanks your interest and for the newspaper cutting. That underpins the information that I already had but without good proof. Looking forward to receiving anything that you at able to send.
thanks John

Thanks to all who have helped me so far. I've have identified that my paternal uncle was an habitual criminal with a lot of convictions and imprisonments starting at 17. He was a prison escapee and a double Army deserter so quite a colourful character. After 1943 things go quiet. There is a divorce in Auckland in 1948 from a Dorethea Theresa Clare and what I believe is his death in 1990 and a burial at Palmerston North. What I haven't established is any evidence of marriage which makes me wonder if the divorce is wrong plus there is no sign of children. If anyone knows anything more about Donald I'd be grateful.
-
The 1937 divorce account of Francis Jones gives his occupation as a "Platelayer" which to me means he was employed by NZ Railways. Platelayers were a semi skilled occupation involved in track maintenance. The plates referred to were steel squares screwed to the then wooden sleepers and upon which the actual rails were laid.

Thanks Alamar, that's twice I had that now so it looks to be firm information. A coincidence because my dad finished up as Platelayer for British Rail. There must be transferable skills from seaman to railway worker.

Hi guys, I've just signed up for Rootschat. KiwiCockney is my Mum's first cousin and he's been feeding me a lot of info and it's easier if I can see updates. Messenger is not so great for me and I'm using note pad to try and straighten things up in my head. Donald would have been my 'half' great uncle. His mother, my maternal great grandmother. I haven't been on this site much (just in passing over the years, but assume that since I've posted in this thread, it will inform me of updates). Interested in the information here. Thanks to everyone responding to Kiwicockney's questions, with great information. And thank you cousin for posting in here!
