I'm hopeful that someone can tell me more about my Uncles Military Medal. All I know is he was from Grantham and served with the Coldstreams.
With thanks. David.

There are 2 Harry's CG. do you have any more info. One was a Sgt. the other a Pte.
-
He was with the 1st Coldstream Guards in France in September 1914, when he asked his mum to send some Woodbines. (Grantham Journal, 19 September 1914)
-
9472 Corporal (Acting Sergeant) H Kemp of Grantham was awarded the MM (Grantham Journal, 1 February 1919)
-
Agree with Shaun J - He was 9472 Cpl (Lance Serjeant) H Kemp 1st Battalion CG , London Gazette 24 Jan 1919. No citation, among many pages of awards.

Archivist of the Coldstreams will likely have details.

There's a report of the award in the Grantham Journal of 5 October 1918. He had served 4 continuous years in France, and had been several times mentioned in despatches. 8 years service altogether.
-
That will be him.
Attested 1912 according his number.
Entered France 13/8/1914.
14 Star + Clasp & Roses
British War & Victory Medals.

Photo of him in the Grantham Journal of 17 March 1917 (page 3).

I fear that we may run into some complex issues of intellectual property and contractual rights if I post the photo here, but you can find it on the British Newspaper Database or on FindMyPast.

Nothing in the diary regarding MM recipients.
-
My understanding is that MM citations were given to the recipients of the award but not recorded for posterity.
-
Some CO's mentioned awardees in their diaries as ribbons were handed out quite soon after the event.
Only 1 OR mentioned for his MM + citation & that was June 1918, nothing after that. April just a figure of 8 MM's awarded, no names.

Soldiers' newspaper photos from WW1 are posted regularly on the photo restoration board for repair and colour...they are after all 100 years. I don't think it would be an issue but I may be wrong. These men fought for our freedom.
