Title: Burial of Matthew Gradwell, 1923?
Post by: JennyMarieGradwell on Tuesday 25 July 17 11:46 BST (UK)
I am trying to track down a burial record for my Great Great Grandfather, Matthew Gradwell. This is the civil record of the death:

Matthew Gradwell death registered Mar 1923 aged 75 Prestwich RD Volume: 8d Page: 425

I have searched burial records on http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

I also asked Bury council who said:

"Sorry but  I can no find no record of the burial of Matthew Gradwell in 1923.
We only keep the records for the council operated cemeteries. Each church keep their own graveyard records."

I've just moved to Prestwich and would love to track his grave down! Does anyone have any ideas where I can go next?

Thank you  :)

One suggestion would be to obtain his death certificate which hopefully will give you an address where he died.  Then you would know where to start with the nearest church.

Was he married at the time or a widower?  He may be buried with a wife or other family members.

Good luck with finding him  :)

Thank you! I have his birth certificate on order and have limited myself to two certificates per month (so as to avoid bankruptcy by genealogy!) It is on my list for next month for sure :)

I believe that his wife, Alice Gradwell (nee Gillibrand) died in Oldham in 1882.

Deaths Mar 1882
GRADWELL   Alice   32   Oldham   8d   453

I can't find a record of her burial on http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/ or the Oldham Council database either.  :-[

Was Alice - Alice Gilibrand ? married in All Saints church ,Newton 3rd September 1870 Matthews father Richard ?
if it was
Matthew married again in the same church 8th dec 1889 to Widow Maria Barnett nee Hyde - Matthews father Richard .

if that is not your Alice - ignore it - if it is could the Village of Newton be his and Alices burial place and not Oldham ??
how far is Newton to Oldham ?

Thank you everyone for this, and for the FindMyPast discovery!

I think I have found out something that explains a lot: https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/prestwich.html

Modern-day Prestwich is a different area to Newton/Failsworth, but in 1923, Failsworth was in the registration district of Prestwich, and that's where the death was registered and burial took place. But now I have the church, thank you again!

Sadly St Johns Church, Failsworth had 99% of the headstones removed (health & Safety) many years ago.

Likewise at All Saints, Newton Heath, 99% of the headstones removed and the overflow cemetery is now a playing field a few streets away from the Church.

Still though, they are stunning buildings, and my mother-in-law was married in All Saints.
