Looking for any info on Joseph Giles please. Born England 1909 and went to Australia - date unknown
I have found him in 1941 living in Kelvin Grove, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
He gives his middle name as Leighton (that was his father's name)
His wife is Rita Ellen.
I can find her living until 1958 - last residence at 11 Thynne Ave, Norman, Bowman, Queensland,Australia. I have a death date for Rita of 15 Oct 1958. Another record, with the same date records the burial of an Ellen R Giles who was the daughter of Thomas Lewis and Annie McCorey.
I cannot find a date for Joseph arriving in Oz. I cannot find a date for him marrying Rita and I cannot find a death for him!
Any help please!

But Now I am confused! You have Percival Walter Scott marrying Emma Rita Lewis in 1908 but there is also Clarence Roderick Scott and Emma Rita.....do you think she married 2 brothers? Or is that her son?
Thanks for all your help!

Hi
If you read the information with care, you will see that Clarence was the son of Walter and Emma.
the records given above show this clearly.

Joseph's parents were Leighton Giles and Beatrice Ethel Partridge.
Thanks for help so far. I had not had time to read the docs as I was dashing out for a meeting so I apologise for the question.
I wonder why daughter Rita Emma is not mentioned in the funeral notices?
The Emma Rita Giles who is buried with Clarence Roderick Scott is too old to be 'my' Rita Emma, therefore i wonder whether Emma R remarried after her husbands death in 1934 and it is pure coincidence that she married someone with the same surname as her daughter's husband??
Pic is of Joseph and Rita Emma Giles. Looks in the 1940s?

The way forward would be to get the marriage cert of Joseph and Emma. That should give her age and parents names.
Keep in mind that the age of death, as recorded on the website, for Emma, may have been mistranscribed.
A check to see if they are on an electoral role together in NSW may be helpful.

There is no record that I have located of a daughter to Emma Rita SCOTT.
I find no reference to such person recorded either.
Could you tell us where you found the record?
Emma Rita SCOTT is on the QLD electoral roll with her son in 1937. (see above)
Then she is not.
A person named Rita Emma GILES appears on the ER with Joseph GILES in 1943. (see above)
There is a marriage in 1939
QLD marriages Emma SCOTT to Joseph GILES 1939/ B 34444
The woman who died had the same parents as the one who was born in Victoria.

The 1943 ER mentioned where Joseph and Rita Ellen are together lists Joseph as a wardsman.
A wardsman works in a hospital (or similar institution).

Joseph and Emma Rita are on the electoral roll in 41 and 43 and 49 at Cardross, Guildford Street, which ties in with the newspaper report of him falling down the ships stairs in 42. His occupation is a wardsman.
They are then at Thynne Ave in 54 and 58 and he is now a motor trimmer.
Someone in this thread advised there was a marriage between Joseph and Emma Scott in 39, which is where I got the surname.
How can I apply to get the wedding certificate sent to me please? I'm in England.
Yes the Giles are a big catholic family! Joseph had 11 surviving siblings.
I wonder why he moved to NSW?
-
Can't see him on the nominal AIF Roll.
The enlistment acceptance notice was 16th Nov 1941
And the accident April 1942.
About 6 months between :-\

Brilliant! Is it best to get the Certificate or the Image? Will both be downloadable immediately? xx
"As further connection between the mother of Clarence SCOTT and the man Joseph GILES, here is an engagement notice which describes Mrs GILES ........ and her address as Guildford Street, Kelvin Grove.1940"
I still don't get this! Clarence Scott was born in 1914, and I believe his mother to be the Emma Rita Lewis b 1881 to Thomas Lewis and Annie Jane McCrorey. If this Emma Rita then married 'my' Joseph Giles in 1939 it would make her some 28 years older than him....and if you look at the photo there isn't that age difference!......
As soon as I get the marriage cert all will be revealed! Stand by....!
-
I'm hoping it has her age, as my first thought when I saw the photo was that she looked like she could be his mother. ;)
I think you get the cert unless only the image is available. I've had both and yes, downloaded immediately after purchase.

Well I paid $30, got a receipt email confirmation......then nothing.
When I go into the site 'download your bought images'....nothing.
:-(
-
When you say "nothing" what exactly do you mean?
What was on your screen?
Did you complete this onscreen (typical) requirement when you clicked download?
https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/queryEntry.m?type=orders
Then scroll down a little to "view"
Sue
-
Yes I fill in the 3 fields, click 'view' and the screen refreshes to this.....
-
Have you been able to sort this or is the image still not downloading?
Earlier this year I used the service and at first I could not find the 'right' button to download the image, but the issue turned out to be a setting on my puter's anti-virus thingy, so it was just a matter of adjusting the setting and then the download option worked for me.
PS, add
I was NOT on an ipad, perhaps that's also an 'issue' stopping the download.

This is very annoying for you. ::)
The message you are getting clearly acknowledges you have made a valid purchase, but......
There is an email address on the website. Best to use it and ask what is going wrong for you.
I would give it a try on someone else's computer too ::)

Did you purchase an image or a certificate?
From their website
If you have ordered an image
The historical image you buy will be available for 14 days for you to view, download or print from your own computer.
We do not provide prints of images.
If you have ordered a certificate
We will print your certificate and post it to you within 10 working days. You cannot download the image of a certificate.
Ducking for cover in case I have missed something here ;D

Historical Certificates cost $30 each (from the website)
Historical images cost $21.40 (from the website)
It may be that this is indeed the crux of the problem.

Doh! Thanks again. I'm sure someone here said you could see both online immediately which is why I went for the certificate as I thought it would have more info. Oh drat. I wonder if they will even post it to England??

I have purchased the cert for you.
It has her as 39, with a correction that she was 57!
Joseph was 29.
Based on her age at marriage, the burial is highly likely to be her with her son.
If you PM me your email addy, I'll get it off to you now.

Well, The certificate image leaves no doubt that the couple in the marriage were those we expected.
The age difference is made perfectly clear in the margin note and they were living at the same address at the time of the marriage.
Joseph GILES' parents are correctly named.
Some census material shows his mother was Ethel Beatrice.
As noted above, on her Victorian birth registration, Emma was simply Emma LEWIS.
Perhaps the Rita was her own invention and this too was clarified in a margin note on the certificate
About the photo auntie bert.
What makes you certain the couple in it are Joseph and Rita Ellen?
Sue
-
Overwhelmed with thanks to JamJar!
My cousin - who is descended from another child of Leighton and Beatrice Ethel (the had 12 in total) - has the photo. Apparently after Joseph 'ran off' to Australia little was ever heard of him again. Joseph's sister is still alive (she is 92) and she suddenly popped up with the info last week that he had a wife called Rita; which is what started this search!
After Leighton died someone did track him down to give him his inheritance.
So Emma really got herself a toyboy didn't she!!!!
Once again, many thanks xx
-
Has the photo names and dates on it?
Just trying to make sure it is of the right couple. I do agree though, the picture looks to be taken in Australia, I can see bush and gum trees in the background (I think).
As to getting a toyboy.
Well, I would think after spinal injuries in 1942 there’s a possibility he was not as well others of his age. She too had suffered injuries in the car accident in 1938.
He was about 50 when Emma died and, and it seems, he did not register to vote again in QLD.
Is it known whether GILES had any siblings or other relatives in Australia?
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/98265338
Another report on the fall and spinal injuries stated here as not serious. :-\

Hi, just checked and apparently this was sent after their wedding, she thinks it is their wedding pic.
Oh Joseph, where did you go to after her death for all those years...????
