Hi

There doesn't seem to be a baptism record for him 1816 +/- 2 in Hoddom but I see from Family Search that he was alive after 1855 so, if he died in Scotland, you would be able to obtain his death cert from Scotlands People (Pay site - I think you have the ref). This will probably give his parents names.  Also the children's names can help if they followed the traditional naming conventions.

Scott's having children baptised (C of S) in Hoddom 1810-1820

Christopher Scott and Esther Weild
John Scott and Janet Bryden
Alexander Scott and Helen Curle
Walter Scott and Christian Kerr

Do any of the children have these names?

Several trees on An''''''''y has this as the parents names as Gadget said death certificate for Robert will confirm the parent's names ...Old Parish records have a list of children born to this couple but don't see anything for Robert also

Thank you Rosie.
This could be him because I know 1841 he is a cotton weaver too. I think his wife died 1849 too so the reason why she isn't on the census?
I will look into it more now  :)

Death for a Robert Scott, aged 70, 1885, Hoddom

It should give his parents' names. This is on ScotlandsPeople and will cost 6 credits

Added - The one that Rosie found in 1871 died in Dumfries  not Hoddom. Ecclefechan, where they were in 1871 is in Hoddom parish.

OK 1885 it was.

Robert Scott, aged 70, general labourer, widower of Alice Irving, died 28 June 1885 , Ecclefchan.
Parents 0 Christopher Scott, Cotton Weaver  and Agnes** MS Weald. Both deceased
Informant James Scott, son (not present)
Cause - Inflammation of the Lungs, Large tumours left side of chest and neck. (sounds not nice at all  :( )

Gadget

** added - I assume that son James got his grandmother's name wrong, as all other records suggest it was Esther.

Still can't find him on the 1881. Nearest so far is aged 60, born Hoddom, working on railways:

Cleugh Cottage, West Calder, Midlothian
Household of Willim Edgar.....

Robert Scott, widower, 60, labourer on railway, b. Hoddom, Dumfriesshire

It could be him.

Also with him are Robert Easton, 39 and William Robertson, 64, both b. Hoddom.  They might well have all found work on the railways and then he returned home through illness or work ending.  Age would be whatever he told William Edgar (also born Hoddom).

I so remember all those train journeys I did between Inverness and Euston and the pull up to Beattock Summit  ;D

I would definitely say James did work on the railway. That family only stopped working on the railway about 20'years ago! All that time and the Scott family had a connection with railways.
I wonder why the mother was written down as Agnes and not her actual name of Esther?
Thank you for all your help.

The most likely reason is that he got her name mixed up with another relative - I've seen this quite frequently on death certs.  He most likely wouldn't have known her, and any reference to her in the family would probably have been as 'your grandmother' or 'my mother' etc...

That's where it gets complicated isn't it with the different spelt surnames. Thanks again. I will try and go back further.  :)
