Title: Bristol St James Missing Register?
Post by: mgeneas on Saturday 29 July 17 18:31 BST (UK)
An ancestor MAY have married at Bristol St James 1766 according to familysearch - no day or month.
But there is no 1754 + marriage register listed on familysearch, the first marriage specific register is 1785-1812.
Is the previous register missing - does anyone know?

There is a note at the start of the 1669-1753 transcription by Roger Price which says:

Many of the Church of England marriages that took place within the Bristol diocese during the period 1754-1837 have been transcribed, indexed and published on CD by the Bristol & Avon Family History Society (B&AFHS) as:
Anon, 2008. Bristol diocese marriage registers Vol 9. Groom & bride indexes & transcripts 1754-1812. B&AFHS.
Anon, 2004. Marriage index Vol 8. Diocese of Bristol 1813-1837. B&AFHS.

Thanks - I really need to look at or get a copy of the original marriage record - to compare signatures etc.

The St James marriage register covering 1766 is 4201251 (Marriages, P/St.J/R/3/3, July 1763-June 1776) in the Familysearch catalogue.  They weren't apparently on microfilm, only imaged digitally from the originals.

Thanks smudwisk. I saw that but was assuming (never assume) that this would not be original marriage records. I will look at the images when I go to the FHC this week.
