Title: Viewing older Word documents.
Post by: Jane Masri on Wednesday 02 August 17 09:49 BST (UK)
Hi,
Have new computer which is using Windows 10.  I want to transfer over from my old computer all of my Word documents via USB (think they were done on Windows 7) but not sure if I can open/edit the older docs with Windows 10.
Also, the new computer came without Word/excel etc,  so, by using Microsoft online Word/Excel can I open/edit/save these older Word documents or do I have to buy/install the office app?

I'm sure you can open older Word docs in the online version, but you can also use the free LibreOffice software which you can download to your PC instead of expensive Microsoft Office. It will usually open any Word, Excel, etc. files. There can occasionally be slight problems with unusual formatting and layouts, but not normally a problem.

If you had the original disk for Microsoft Office you might be able to re-install it on Windows 10.

Open Office (and by extension Libre Office) may have problems with images embeded in a Word document but the actual text should be fine.

I had Office Home and Student 2010 on my old PC running Windows 7, I transferred it to new lap top running Windows 10. You can do this if you have the Product Key.

Any  Microsoft Office Suite doc that you accessed in Win7 will also work in Win10, providing the suite is installed in 10.
If you have a legal copy of media then you can reinstall from the media.
Subsequently all available Office Suite updates will install (if you want) AND YOU WILL BE UP TO DATE. This is via the Windows Update Engine. (A check box needs a tick).
Also look online for the free Office Suite Readers from MS (Word. Excel, Powerpoint etc) that will allow you to read the files if that's all you want.
Do this BEFORE you start with all the other alternatives previously recommended.

The online version of MS Office is a subscription service that has fees associated. $$ :( There is no media, only downloads.

The past versions of Office 2007 and 2010 are available to download here

All you have to do is type in the 25 character license number at the bottom of the page

Just to add to the list of possible Microsoft Office replacements, recently Dick Eastman in his Online Genealogy Newsletter, recommends Zoho Workplace, see
