Title: DNA traveller connections
Post by: lesleyhannah on Wednesday 02 August 17 13:18 BST (UK)
Does anyone know whether Romany /gypsy ancestry would show up in the DNA results? We have a lot of Irish which I believe includes significant Scottish ancestry, but equally West European which is a bit of a mystery. Have just found a couple of Traveller families marrying into my tree, but don't know whether my relatives were also travellers.
Can't find any help in ancestry so thanks for any help.

You may get DNA matches to individuals who have Romany ancestry, but if you are referring to "ethnicity" then Romany is not one of the 26 global regions that AncestryDNA reports:

FamilyTreeDNA has similar Population Clusters (but uses different reference sample groups to identify them):

Thanks. That's helpful. I 've found Romany families amongst inlaws but no proof that my blood relatives are travellers (some clues but no proof). My son did the DNA and we wondered if that could help to settle the mystery. Thanks again - will keep on digging!
