Title: Where to look for a marriage in Washington DC?
Post by: Forfarian on Thursday 03 August 17 16:11 BST (UK)
I am looking for the marriage of Allan Winfred Henderson to Barbara Louise Robertson. Allan was born in London on 24 May 1899, and served in the British Army. In 1943 he arrived at St Albans, Vermont, on his way to take up a post with the British Army Staff in Washington DC. There is another record of him arriving at the Port of New York on 28 December 1950, which gives his last residence as Washington DC, his address as 3925 Benton St NW, and his next of kin as his wife Barbara, at the same address. It also says he had previously been in the US from June 1943 until 26 December 1950, which is just 2 days before this immigration record. (I don't know what to make of this either!)

According to a stone in the Masonic Memorial Gardens, Reno, Nevada Allan died in 1990 and Barbara Louise was born 1908 and died 1997. Family lore says that Barbara's surname was Robertson.

I have not found any record of his marriage in England, Scotland or Wales, so I am wondering if perhaps Barbara was a US citizen and they were married in Washington DC. However I don't know which state to look in for a marriage in Washington DC.

The Nevada birth and death records on Family Search only go to 1992, and they don't include Washoe County, which is where I gather Reno is,  so I can't expect to find any information there about Barbara.

There are some District of Columbia marriages at FamilySearch but I don't see Henderson/Robertson.  It is also possible that they were married in one of the nearby Virginia or Maryland suburbs of DC.

I have not declared defeat...... but not far off.

Firstly I checked Winfred. Yes that was his middle name. Registered Camberwell London/Surrey.

I found the site with his memorial in Reno. Informative but would have helped with exact dates.

I will keep on truckin. (American vernacular)

This looks like the burial of the Whitehead parents - https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=33216870&ref=acom

Percy Whitehead born 18 Oct 1876 in England died 31 Oct 1960 in Carson City, Nevada.  Informant was John K. Whitehead of Washoe Valley, Nevada.

I found Percy's obit, and he was survived by son John K. Whitehead of Washoe Valley and daughter Mrs. A.W. Henderson of Carson City.

Good find, RJ.   :)

I think this is Barbara's marriage to Mr. Jones:  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV8H-XGWQ  There are a few passenger lists for her going back and forth to England as Whitehead.  This passenger list has Barbara & Sidney Jones on the same page (although Barbara is far below, the line Sidney is on is referenced) and Barbara has the right birth date - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-95ZB-9826?i=29&cc=1923888  This passenger list from 1936 also has them together and living in New York - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G5FH-SJ8N?i=14&cc=1923888  This looks like them in the 1940 census - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K3BL-6B4

Thank you, Barryd, it's very kind of you to look them up for me. I have reams of information about this family including details of Allan's parents, grandparents, siblings and cousin and their marriages and all their descendants, including all relevant census - I have been working on it for years with Allan's niece. In fact the only major piece of information we did not have when I started this thread was when and where Allan and Barbara were married, and we now have that, plus information about Barbara's antecedents. I really do appreciate you taking the time to look for them on my behalf, but please don't put yourself to the trouble of duplicating work already done.

Typically, of course, every answered question produces at least one new one; in this case, why did the family think Barbara's surname was Robertson?

Hi!  I joined this chat-thing because I happened to be googling in hopes of somehow finding Allan's middle name... and found your posts!  Are you a relative?  I was a friend of both Allan & Louisa [yes, nee Whitehead], in fact, I actually saved one of Allan's business cards from the 1960's from the trailer park [we were the family which rented the Victorian while they lived in the cottage & became "relatives" ourselves...] and I have Louisa's mother's picture, which I could attach if you are interested...  Best!

Hi Molly, welcome to RootsChat.

Yes, Allan was my 4th cousin, and I have been working on that branch of the family intermittently for some time. I am in touch with his niece. She shared with me the results of her research, and I have been able to add quite a few bits here and there.

We would be interested in any information about Allan and his wife. You've already added a snippet by telling us that she used the name Louisa rather than Barbara, thank you.

Once you have posted two more messages on this forum I will be able to contact you off-forum and arrange to exchange more detailed notes.

How exciting!  Yes, for the last many decades, she went by Louisa, though in her younger years she was called Babs and she worked with the Red Cross during the war.

If you don't have it, Louisa's mother's name was Barbara Louise Jacques Whitehead - Louise with an E, while the younger was Louisa with an A.

Thanks you! I did know that Babs/Louisa' mother's name was Barbara Jacques, but not that she also had the middle name.

BTW I did mean to add that yes, Allan's middle name was Winfred with an 'n' in the middle, not Wilfred. His father was also Winfred, but I don't know where the name came from. His parents were James Henderson and Lavinia Syme, and his grandparents were George Henderson and Margaret Masson, Andrew Syme and Margaret Sturrock. There is no immediately obvious candidate in the 1861 census.
