Title: Edith Ella Fields?
Post by: Cambridge on Monday 07 August 17 15:42 BST (UK)
Hello,
I'm trying to trace some information about Edith Ella Fields - my great aunt.

Born in 1896/7, she was 5 at the time of the 1901 census. However that's all I can find about her, no death record, marriage record, nothing else. She was the daughter of George (My Great Grandfather) and Clara Fields (Nee Kilby).

There is a chance she did marry a Mr Young but again, I can't find any trace! Am I looking in the wrong place?

I don't suppose anyone can shed any light on this or help please? It seems the whole family was out when the 1911 census was done because I can't find a single one of them! All twelve of them!!

Any help would be much appreciated...

Thanks!

list all 12 from the 1891/1901 census and we'll see if we can find some leads for you in 1911.
We won't be able to do a a lookup though

Fileds! Found them ha ha!! Thank you so much!

However Edith Ella isn't on this census. She was 5 in 1901 so should have been 15. I can't find any death record for her still. I don't suppose you have a suggestion as to where else I should lok do you please?

Thank you!!

There is a 1911 census for a Edith Ella Field born in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire aged 15. She is a domestic servant living and working in the household of William Joynes, Southgate, New Southgate N, Middlesex.

There is also a death record for a Edith Ella Field, 19th January 1942, Miles Platting, Metropolitan Borough of Manchester, Greater Manchester.

Found her! Thank you so very much!

It's funny - our name switched from 'Field' to 'Fields' around 1800 and it seems as if it swiched back in the eyes of the census takers!

And I wonder if that's her death record. If so, she's the second daughter to die relatively young :(

I really appreciate your help, thank you so much!

The census takers work from written records completed by the family or someone on their behalf.  The birth registrations for the children of George & Clara change from Field to Fields with no particular pattern as to why.

The Edith E Field who died in Manchester in 1942 was aged 57, so looks 10 years too  old to be yours.

It's definitely Edith Ella on both censuses I'm afraid.

I'm writing a book for my dad on his family as it seemed that my grandad and his siblings just grew up and scattered to the winds! He also went missing for six months during the war, served at Dunkirk and Monte Cassino so there are lots of stories to dig up I think!

Having looked at some other documents, I believe she was known as Elsie later on and may have married a Mr Young with a connection to Kettering. I can't find any marriage or death record for her though?

There's an Elsie M Fields married Joseph L Young in Kettering registration district in the Dec quarter 1933. You need the marriage cert to see if her  named father ties up with what you know about Edith. However living in Luton in 1939 was Joseph L Young b 1908_ and Elsie M Young (Smith) born 1914 who might be the same couple

Ooh thank you!

I'll look into this possibility! I have GenesReunited and have searched all through there and paid for docs etc so I promise I'm not just being lazy!!

There's 9 of them in total and I have a date and place of death for a few and a spouses name I found in an article about my GDads funeral but very little details besides! It's so frustrating!

Again being tripped up with the Field/Fields!

I think this could be her as another brother moved to Bedford as well. Maybe this one didn't die in 1925 after all...

Thank you so much all for your help. I need to see that marriage certificate to see if it has further details!

Mum Clara died 7 Nov 1944
Report of the funeral in the Biggleswade Chronicle, Friday 17 November 1944
DEATH OF MRS. C. FIELD
The death occurred on November 7th of Mrs. Clara Field, of 65, Potton Road, at  the age of 79 years. Mrs. Field formerly lived in Sandy opposite the Station and later in Ivel Lane. Her husband, a platelayer on the railway, died about six years ago.
The funeral took place at Sandy Cemetery on Friday, the Rev. J. Rigden Green (Baptist pastor) officiating.
The mourners were: Mr. G. Field, Mr. and Mrs. B. Field, Mr. and Mrs. C. Field, Mr. P. Field, Mr. F. Field, Mrs. L. Field (sons and daughters-in-law), Mrs. Ferman and Mrs Craddock (daughters), Mr. F. Field, Mr. and Mrs. T. Kilby (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law), Sister Nancy, Mr. and Mrs. L. Young. Mr. L. Field was unable to attend owing to service overseas.
Wreaths were from all the relatives, Mrs. Pates and family, Trinity Sisterhood, Mrs. Mead, Mrs. Pepper, the twins Peter and Ann, and the Field family at Havelock Road.

So all the family gathered for Clara's funeral in 1944. Was Edith Ella there?
How many daughters did George and Clara have?
1. Ida May Field, born 1893
She might have married George Arnott in Biggleswade district, Sep 1921 (Ida M Fields)
If so, a possible death, Dec 1937, Bedford
Ida May Arnott, age 44

2. Edith Ella Field, born 1896

3. Violet Louisa Fields, born 1901, registered Sep qtr.
It looks like she could have married Albert J Fermor in Tonbridge in 1923? Thus she would be Mrs "Ferman", one of the daughters mentioned in the newspaper.
Death, August 1989, Brighton
Violet Louisa Fermor, d-o-b 9 June 1901

If there were no more daughters, that would leave Mrs Craddock.

Mr and Mrs L Young were at Clara's funeral, but it didn't say who they were. It seems to lead back to the Joseph L Young - Elsie M Fields marriage in 1933

However living in Luton in 1939 was Joseph L Young b 1908_ and Elsie M Young (Smith) born 1914 who might be the same couple

This might be her birth then -
June 1914 Biggleswade 3b 579
Fields, Elsie May
mother Fields
(has the dreaded dash on the new index)

So it looks like Elsie was the daughter of either Ida May or Edith Ella. Possibly George and Clara might have brought her up?
Elsie having the middle name May might make Ida the more likely mother, but not necessarily.

I tend to agree that Elsie M Fields was the granddaughter of Clara Fields. But there's clearly an  inconsistency between the two funeral reports - she wasn't both the daughter as reported in the 1938 funeral report and an unnamed relative, probably grandddaughter, as reported in the 1944 report.

Yet the floral tributes included Elsie Len and grandchildren (of Edith's father George), which implies that Elsie was George's daughter. Perhaps to hide Elsie's illegitimacy she was brought up as George and Clara's child

I think Edith may have died prior to 1938 - the reports list relatives left by the deceased, not the total number of children. The death of Edith E Bird in Aylesbury age 29 fits perfectly with an 1896  birth. To stand any chance of sorting out this mess I think you need to invest in a few certificates Elsie's birth and marriage to Mr Young, and Edith's marriage to Henry Bird for a start.

Good luck!

David

Hello,

Apologies for the delay in replying - for some reason it didnt send me any notifications!

Well, if I could hug each and every one of you I would - thank you so, so much for your help in solving this mystery. I'm actually a little bit choked up to read the report of her funeral.

Thats two of the daughters who died young, sadly.

There was George, Herbert (Bert), Percy, Cecil, Laurence, Violet, Doris, Edith and Ida May. We know very little about any of them but I'm determined to keep digging!!

The Mr L Fields who was serving overseas at the time of her funeral was my Grandad Lawrence.

Thank you so, so much! I am so very grateful!
