Title: The Thacker/James Family
Post by: Carly287 on Monday 07 August 17 16:34 BST (UK)
Between the; 1871 and; 1881 Census, the James Family changed their name to; Thacker?? I have no idea why, even though I know for definite I have the right family. I have traced the James Family, back to 1826. John James, baptised on the; 29th January, 1826, Syresham, Northamptonshire. His parents, were; James James?! and Hannah. If anyone is able to help me that would be great! Thanks, Carly

Have you traced his parents in the census?  Just a few thoughts below on possible parents

1861 living in Syresham
James James 62 Ag Lab  Biddlesdon, Buckinghamshire,
Hannah James    57 Ladborough, Warwickshire,
Charles James    19  Biddlesdon, Buckinghamshire

1851  Living in Biddlesdon, Buckinghamshire
James James  53 Farmer 12 Acres Shalstone, Buckinghamshire
Anna James 47    Farmer Wife    Warwickshire
Joseph James 22 Farmers Son Syresham, Northamptonshire
Charles James     6  Farmer Son Syresham, Northamptonshire

1841  Living in  Biddlesden

James James 35    Ag Lab Buckinghamshire
Anna James 35
Joseph James  13 Buckinghamshire
Clementina James 6    Buckinghamshi

Whilst there is a John James age 10 living in Syresham and  working as a servant

Baptism for Clementina https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NPY9-W4D   and I think this is the birth of the son Charles with mother's maiden name Thacker from the GRO Birth Index

CHARLES  JAMES    Mother's maiden name THACKER
GRO Ref Sept Qtr 1841   BRACKLEY  Volume 15  Page 210

Baptism of Hannah Thacker that ties into the birth place in 1861  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JMNH-LKS

I can't see a marriage to James James to Hannah Thacker at the moment -Maybe why the family used the Thacker surname on occasions  :-\

I researched my James/Thacker family quite a few years ago and only ever listed them on hard copy. This is from memory and before checking my records. John James and wife Jane left Syresham for Sheffield with sons Arthur, Charles, Herbert & Enos (not Enock as shown in 1871 census), they also had a daughter Mary and may have left one daughter behind. Enos is my gt grandfather and I probably have more information on the whole family that anyone else. I am willing to share the information but would like to know your connection. I do have an idea why the family changed it's surname and I have a history backwards before Syresham where Thacker was previously a family name. I would be happy to hear from you.

Carly, I see that I have to have posted 3 messages/replies before I can send a personnel message privately with my email address, so I will put 2 more lots of Thacker information on shortly for that to work, unless there are any other suggestions on how to send a private message ?.

Family of John James   b.1827 d.1890 m.14/12/1848  Jane Norman Kirby b.1829 d.1889
Both are buried in Sheffield.

Children:  Another researcher found a Sarah James b.1848  in Syresham and thought it was a child of John & Jane but I have found no evidence for that.

Arthur Amos James. bapt 14/3/1850. (1st marriage 1868 in Syresham to Susannah Lovesey)
Second marriage to Alice King in Walkley, Sheffield, they had no children but raised Theresa Thacker, daughter of Enos  James, after his first wife died 3 years after giving birth.

Charles Norman James. Bapt 11/4/1852. Married Rose Broadhead in Sheffield and they had 3 children before moving to Canada where they had 2 further children.

Mary Janet James. Bapt 4/3/1855.

Herbert Kirby James. Bapt 27/9/1857. Married  Eliza Alice King and they had 10 children but 2 died very young. Family still living in Sheffield area.

Enos James. Bapt 10/5/1866 married Florence Alinda Beal who died 3 years after giving birth to my grandmother Theresa Thacker. Enos married again and had 2 further children.

The Thacker surname was added between 1866 and 1871, probably at the time of the move to Sheffield. The only reason I believe is that Arthur did not want to commit bigamy by not divorcing his first wife, although perhaps unbeknown to him his first wife had died. In 2005 a person living in Syresham declined to talk about the James/Thacker family because of what happened all those years before. My father who also lived at Arthurs house in his early life said that Arthur lived with his cousin, which was not true, it was his wife.
