Title: Samuel Beagley b. 1806
Post by: MacGrigor on Tuesday 08 August 17 16:36 BST (UK)
Hello,

Would anyone be able to tell me anything about Thomas and Mary Beagley, parents of Samuel? He was born in 1806, in Farringdon.

Thanks,

Adam

Have you used his baptism to search for siblings? What does the original register state as regards occupation?

When , where and to whom does Samuel wed? What names witness?

Pauline

I have only viewed an online copy of the baptism. His parents had children from 1804 till about 1812. Samuel was a bricklayer. He married Susannah Watkins, of Herefordshire, and she died in 1847, in Lambeth. I don't know when they married or where. They were having children as early as 1827. Eliza Beagley was born in 1808, Daniel in 1810, and George in 1812.

Can anyone locate a marriage record for the couple, or any other information?

When do you have the baptism of their first child

1804.

Also, I found Samuel's second marriage in 1850, in Lambeth, and his father's name is given as Thomas and he is a bricklayer, just like Samuel.

William Thomas Beagley was Samuel's son, and witness to his second marriage, and was born in 1826, in either Kensington or Lambeth. He died in 1893, in Guildford. So Samuel presumably married Susannah Watkins before 1826.

So we are looking at:
Thomas and Mary Beagley marrying before 1804, probably in Hampshire
Samuel Beagley and Susannah Watkins marrying before 1826, in Middlesex

Have you not considered possible children being baptised prior to the family being in Faringdon.  There are baptisms in neighbouring Headley in the 1790's.

The marriage is likely to be in the parish /county in which Thomas's wife came from which according to 1841 was not Hampshire

Yes, that's definitely a possibility. I did consider a marriage outside of the county, but I didn't know that people travelled that far outside of their own county, especially when considering that Farringdon is in the middle (ish) of Hampshire.

That's really sad. One set of ancestors were in an asylum because they were poor, so it's a shame to see a relative with mental health problems.

People traveled a lot further than you would think in those days,  Faringdon is not that far from the Surrey border. If those Headley baptisms were their children that is even closer to the Surrey boundary.  If Samuel was a publican he could have moved around quite a bit.

It was possible it was what we would now class as dementia.

I have a woman in my tree who ended up in a similar institution in Lancaster following the birth of her child and spent the rest of her life there.  She probably had what is post natal depression.  Mental health was treated a lot differently then.

Possible marriage:  Thomas Beagley and Mary Bettesworth (both otp) married 4/9/1787 in Frensham (just up the road from Headley).

2 children born in Frensham, baptised in Headley,  Anne 20/2/1791 and Harriotte 17/4/1797.

There is also a Maria Beagley baptised in Bentworth, parents Thomas and Mary on 26/12/1802.

Baptism for Mary Bettesworth on 21/10/1772 in Bramshott, Hampshire, this age fits in nicely with the details on the 1841 census.  All these places are within 15 miles of each other and Farringdon.
