Title: Scottish Occupations - "Changekeeper"
Post by: Daonnachd on Wednesday 09 August 17 11:52 BST (UK)
Hi,
I have found a will describing the person as a 'Changekeeper' in Dunkeld. Can anyone tell me what a 'Changekeeper' was?

Thanks,

Did a bit of googling;

Appears to be an Innkeeper;
Ref. - Chambers, The Concise Scots Dictionary, 1996
ISBN 0 550 11860 8

Another Historian has;
An Innkeeper/ pub landlord/or similar purveyor of alcoholic beverages.

ScotlandsPlaces has;
Chg. Kpr - Changekeeper, Innkeeper

It is surprising how much detail can be found about innkeepers, their wives, servants and premises in the diaries of travellers. It might be worth trying to find out if anyone mentions a stay in Dunkeld.

Newspapers also report on local events held at inns.
