Title: ROBERTSON William & Mrs. arrived "Jura" 1858.......
Post by: minniehaha on Wednesday 09 August 17 23:33 BST (UK)
As the following has again become somewhat unwieldy, I have split this new topic off it......

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=776191.45

From reply # 53, part quote:

The ship "Jura" arrived into Port Chalmers, Dunedin 23rd Sept, 1858, on passenger list were: William & Mrs. Robertson, plus 8 children, also listed separately were Miss Agnes Robertson, who later married John Souness 11.9.1863, Dunedin, and Miss Jane Robertson who married James Curle, 30th March, 1860, Dunedin.NZ".

I have always understood from family memories that Jane Robertson and her sister Agnes came to New Zealand on their own. However there was a William Robertson and his wife, plus their 8 children who travelled on the same voyage.

I am wondering if more information can be found about this William Robertson.

[The father of Jane & Agnes was Peter Robertson who was born in 1803 @ Coldingham, Berwick and William is not a name that appears in the family.]

P. S. I do hope I am not being too greedy putting up all these requests? I feel a bit  :-[ but the topics already on the board have taken wings and I think I need to clip them.  ;D

Hi Minniehaha,

No, not greedy, just very logical. ;D 8) It makes good sense to use separate topics in this case.

I'm a bit busy today, but does William and his family appear in a 1851 Census  for UK, SCT or WLS? Finding them will give you ages, names, occupations and places of birth (the original passenger list of the Jura should provide some of the same information).

William probably continued the same occupation in New Zealand.

Is there an obituary for William on Papers Past?

They could have had 3 more children by 1858

The ages of this couple buried in the Old Port Chalmers cemetery  match the census ages

Hello to you both......

Thank you for your responses.

I don't have any clues about this William & Mrs. Robertson. Just floundering around here I'm afraid, to see if there might be a connection to the sisters Jane & Agnes of the same surname.
