Title: Mahon, county Meath
Post by: Mairi McMahon on Thursday 10 August 17 19:57 BST (UK)
My grandma was Michael Mahon born around 1887, son of William and Anne Mahon. His brother was James born around 1891 and his sister Alice, born around 1895.  Are there any of my relations out there?

Looking at the building returns for Westmanstown 1911
houses 7 to 14 were owned by  G Shackleton & Sons the local flour millers so it is most likely that Joseph Melia was also employed there.

Hello again,
I had been using a lap top out of town and am back at my main computer now.  I thought I had seen the census for my grandma - Brigid Dillon who was a servant at Blackhall, Dunboyne County Meath which you had posted.  Unfortunately I can't see it now and cannot find it on the census records. Was I dreaming?

Hello, I've only just seen this post so sorry for the late reply. I am Mike Mahon, the (adopted) son of Michael Gerard Mahon (1930-1991) ,and he in turn was the son of Michael Mahon (1885-1970), late of Manor Street in Dublin.  My adopted dad's sisters and brothers were Bill, Kathleen and Marie.
I see you were hoping to get in touch with some of your cousins that are still in Ireland, and I am still here in Dublin. I'd be delighted to hear from you and if I can help with any family tree research please let me know.
The Mahons ran the Dunboyne dairy in queen Street in Dublin, and I have some pictures of Michael and Bridget. My aunt Kathleen (who we all called tanty) and aunty Marie (who married Tom Cunningham) are buried in the cemetery in rooskey, Dunboyne.  My uncle Bill lived in Andover in England and passed away in 1989.
I believe there are still some Dillon relations in the Dunboyne area.
Mike

Michael, I came to Dublin to stay with Kathleen shortly before your da passed away and then Kathleen.  Kathleen told about you and your end of school exams but you were out of town.Met your dad and mum Betty who were living in Blackrock.  I certainly remember the shop in Queen Street. I am in
France right now on holiday but back in the UK shortly. Mairi

Hi Marie,  I have recently been in contact with Mike Mahon regarding the same thing as you, although I am more interested in the Melia side, after only recently finding out that my Biological Father is a Melia.

I have found some info on him and his family, but still need more if the Melia name means anything to you?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Mairi,

Thanks for the quick reply.  I hope you got on well with MyHeritage, i'm on both Ancestry and MyHeritage as I was able to upload the DNA to MyHeritage, where there is quite a bit of info on both the Mahon's and Melia's, i'm just missing some smaller details.

Best regards

Bev

Hi Mairi,

No, I was brought up in North Wales, but now live on the Isle of Wight. I only found out a few years ago that my Dad was not my biological Father, who was Irish but didn't really do anything with the info until I did the DNA test. I was very lucky, as the person (from hundreds) at the top of my DNA list, was Agnes Mahon's Grandaughter, and my cousin, and she had already done lots of research on the Mahon's and Melias, so gave me a great start in finding details on my father.  I did the DNA test with Ancestry first but was able to upload it to MyHeritage for free, but you can't do it the other way round as Ancestry won't allow it.  Their testing of DNA is slightly different, so you will almost certainly find different people by doing both.  Regards, Bev

Hi, I am the great great grand daughter of Elizabeth Mahon born 1880, the daughter of William Mahon and Anne Greene.  I believe we are researching the same Mahon family.   She became Elizabeth Melia and that is my branch of the family tree.

I am particularly interested if anyone knows what happened Bridget (born in 1890) or other general information about what happened the rest of the family. I found some great information on here and didn't know about Mike Mahon, for example, or the dairy!

Thanks

Hi, I instigated this thread so would li like to say that I now live in York.  The dairy shop was in Queen's Street (now demolished). I spent many glorious moments there from the age of 4 smoking woodbines with my Grandmother Bridget Mahon.  She also taught me at a young age to drink guiness. The best person to speak to is Mike Mahon who is still living and Dublin and knows so much.
