For which county or country?

Personally, I use FreeBMD for BMDs - it's free!
And FamilySearch for other stuff - also free.

Thank you all noted.

This is for the UK. The people I am looking at were travelling actors so could be anywhere in UK.

I've got to the stage where I need 1911 census.

If you need any Scottish records including the 1911 census then you need to go to ww.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  to see the original entries not transcriptions. It is a pay site but very reasonable.

1911 Irish census (free)-

For vital records check Resource boards for a particular county to see what might be available.

If you need 1911 census for England, the only place to see the actual image is FindMy Past, which I'm afraid is a subscription site, but also includes the 1939 register.

BIB - Not quite. You can see the originals of the 1911 census on Ancestry too. However you cannot see the 1939 Registration on ancestry.

You can buy credits for findmypast if you only want to look at the 1911 census, however looking at the 1939 Registration just using credits is very expensive so a subscription is better.

Does your local library have free access to Ancestry and/or FindMyPast?
Mine has Ancestry Library Edition.

You could use free sessions to see if either of them offer what you need?

That is a good idea.

The Genealogist also has original images of 1911 household census returns.

freeCEN the census equivalent to freeBMD is apparently up and running.  I haven't used it yet but it should be worth a go.

Find my Past and Ancestry both offer a two week free trial. I don't know of this includes the 1939 register on FindMyPast.

Find my Past have occassional one month for £1 subscriptions, but they do not include the 1939 register.

Remember to cancel the trial, or opt out of autorenewal, by the end of the two weeks or they will take the cost of an annual subscription from you.

FreeREG which has lots of parish register for all over the UK, all for free. The site is growing all the time.

If it was to be a paid site which had some records that FreeREG don't yet have then yes Ancestry or FindMyPast is good but FindMyPast has a better search feature.

Hmm!  That's a matter of opinion, I personally prefer Ancestry's search feature especially for censuses.  However I use both FindMyPast and Ancestry as each has its strengths.

Keith, don't overlook newspapers as actors would often be mentioned.  My public library ticket enables me to access Nineteenth Century British Newspapers, a really useful resource.

It really depends what area you are searching. A lot of my ancestors were from London, so I found Ancestry better for them as they also had some marriage certificates, which saved me having to send for them, and saved money. However, for other records, I've found FindMyPast better.

As you're in Somerset, the Bristol Family History Centre might be an option. Can't tell from the website whether the one in Bath is closed or not.

Free access to Ancestry and the Familysearch images. No 1939 tho'.

Newspapers are also on FindMyPast.   I agree both have their own strengths, I switch around depending on who I'm researching, timeframe and place.
