Title: Cheshire Workhouses
Post by: Kerry Challinor on Saturday 12 August 17 00:38 BST (UK)
According to Cheshire Workhouse Records (Birth), my aunt was born in 1895 in a workhouse located in Church Street. Other names on the same record also show Church St, Frodsham as the birthplace.
However, it is my understanding that the workhouse in Church St was closed by that date. The Tarvin and Runcorn Workhouses were on Heath Lane and Northwich Rd respectively. Was there in fact a workhouse in Church Road, Chester, in 1895? If so, I would like to have its name. Thanks.

Also is there any record of people in workhouses between the censuses? I want to know if my grandfather and other children were also in the workhouse with my grandmother Sarah Challenor and her newborn.

Most workhouses had an attached infirmary - which was used by poorer people before the advent of the NHS in 1947.
People didn't have to be a workhouse inmate in order to use the infirmary.

Chester workhouse was at Roodee (used until 1873) and Hoole (from 1873).
Tarvin, known as Great Boughton until 1871, was  at Heath Lane.
Runcorn workhouse was at Dutton.

The parish of Frodsham was a  constituent parish of the Runcorn Poor Law Union.
So it would be the Runcorn workhouse.
See: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Runcorn/

Any existing records will be at Cheshire Record Office, Duke Street. Chester.

There was no workhouse in Frodsham. Until 1857 the Runcorn Poor Law Union provided outdoor relief to those in desparate need, so before 1857 the destitute were spared the ignominy of incarceration in a workhouse. The Dutton Workhouse opened in 1857.

Wouldn't be Church road in Tranmere Birkenhead would it? That's where their workhouse was situated.
