Title: Gilbert Rowland Humphries .. Bravery Medal???
Post by: Alders on Tuesday 15 August 17 13:53 BST (UK)
/Hello all,
A friend has me looking up a relative who they are convinced received a bravery medal during WW1. I am not so good at looking at Military records but i can't see one, wondering if i missed something? I checked the Gazette but again couldn't see anything.
Gilbert Rowland Humphries DOB  29/9/1898, i have him being in the Machine Gun Corps as a Pte serial number 142829 10/Glouc
i can see that he had the star, war & victory medals.
There is another Gilbert R Humphries who has me a little confused He was with the Worcester 40239 after transferring form the Gloucester Yeomanry 3289. He also received the usual medals.. i wondered if this could be the same chap but then he wouldn't receive the same medals again would he???

I am awaiting a picture of the medals, but thought i could get a heads up with your help.

Thanks

Th Worcester Regiment man was a recipient of the Military Medal, gazetted 16 Sep 1918.  It isn't on his medal card, clerical error no doubt.  No detailed service record unfortunately.

Two different men.  Medals will have his number and name inscribed.

Is this the chap?  Or is this yet another Humphries? The Machine Gun Corps bit matches!  ???
14721 Pte. H. Humphries, Macli. Gun
Corps.
For conspicuous gallantry in action.
When his section serjeant was wounded,
Private Humphries dragged him to a shellhole,
taking his gun there. Later he
brought in a second gun, which was lying in
the open, and, joined by another man, they
were successful in extricating both gum..
His bravery and skill was most marked.

No, two different men.

The Worcester man, with the number you gave 40239 is the Sep 1918 Military Medal.  He was not in the MGC.

Your MGC man 14721 was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal , gazetted November 1916.

The only Gilbert Humphries I can see with the 3 Medals is:
13285 10/Glos. R. then 142829 MGC.

Jim1 - see earlier post.

Alders - The medal card of 40239 Pte G R Humphries Worcester Regiment records his British War and Victory Medals but for whatever reason, does not record his MM.  His number name and regiment are clear in the LG.  You have the link'

It is 14721 H Humphries MGC who has the three war medals AND the DCM (1916) (he is the one you posted the citation for) and who also, just found it, received the MM as a Sgt in 1918 link here https://www.thegazette.co.uk/Edinburgh/issue/13301/page/2834.

This is not the same MGC man Gilbert Humphries who was in the Glos and the MGC who as jim1 says has the three medals but no gallantry awards.

There are three Humphries in this discussion, two of whom received gallantry awards, one of them twice, only you know which one relates to the relative although if he is sure about the forenames Gilbert Rowland, then surely we can discount the H Humphries at least?

Yes, just no idea as to why he received it! How incredibly frustrating.

The answer may not be there but have you looked through the war diary?
