Title: Looking for a band my mums uncle was in
Post by: Louise Chehdan on Thursday 17 August 17 09:14 BST (UK)
Hello I don't know if anyone can help. My mum has told me of her uncle Leslie Stanley Jelfs Who was in a band called "The Gaucho Seranaders" As he was from East Ham I don't know if they played there or if they travelled. At a rough guess this would have been on the late 1920's - 1930's.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
I've added a picture of his younger days.

There is an old 78 rpm record Fox River Valley / Indian Love by Pete Cantos and the Gaucho Serenaders (note the spelling) but it appears to be American.

There's a mention in the Chelmsford Chronicle, 3 February 1939:

Dagenham - The choral and dramatic sections of the S E Essex Technical College held an enjoyable dance at the College on Saturday. Messrs. Terry McConnell and Jack Thurlow were M.C.'s, and the music was by the Gaucho Serenaders.

Thank you very much.
Dagenham was a place that Leslie lived. I'm really happy to have just this snippet of information. It sounds daft but I love to know a bit about my family's every day lives.
Kind regards Louise

Not daft, it is why we are all doing our family history.  It is easy to get the certificates and census but a bonus to get newspaper cuttings.

Hi... Just found your search for Leslie Stanley Jelfs, who was my dad... I have the same photograph as the one posted by you on this site along with others of my dad. He unfortunately passed away some 44 years ago shortly after my Mother, Elsie Jelfs.

I still have dads violin to this day.

Just been looking through the few photos that I have of him and have found a picture of dad and his brother, your mums uncle, when they lived in East Ham, London. They were aged about 6 or 7

Hope this helps

Hello Lesley
How great to hear from you. I was on the phone to mum (who is your cousin) when your e mail came through, I told her and she was very excited. It would be great to see any photos of Leslie and of course his family, I also have photos of his parents Elizabeth and George and have managed to get quite a long way back with Elizabeth's family tree. Since beginning my research I have contact with May's daughter Ivy and her family and Frank's family.
Hoping to hear from you again
Kind regards Louise

Hi Louise.... that was a quick reply...

I will try to scan some photos and post them for you and your mum to see.
I knew dad was in a band but didn’t know the name.
Many years ago we took Dad see someone in the vicarage in Liverpool (St Albans) who I believe may have been his brother.. possibly a vicar.

Hello yes I am looking at my tree today and your message popped up!!
The visit to Liverpool would have been to your uncle Charlie. Mum kept in touch with him until he died I don't think he was a vicar, I'm not quite sure I'll ask mum next time we speak.

To send any photographs to me you need to send 1 more message and then you have access to my private email address.

Wow.. You have done your homework.. Yes it was my uncle Charlie. Unfortunately dad didn't live too long after our visit so I'm glad we made the trip to Liverpool from Essex so he could see him...

Hopefully after this post I'll be able to send the photos to you

Lesley

There now we can send personal messages. Did you know your grandparents at all? George and Elizabeth. I have a few photos that I would be very happy to share with you.
