Title: Advice with English records
Post by: jimrobertson24 on Friday 18 August 17 19:02 BST (UK)
Hello
I have undertaken extensive research into my family whom have all been from Scotland. I have found Scotland's People an excellent and easy resource.
One of my ancestors has now brought me to searching English records and I'm struggling to find any detail on ancestry. His name is James Milne Robertson and was born in 1908 in Dundee. He seems to have moved to England and I can only assume it had something to do with his work. He graduated as a dentist in 1926 and I see he is in Evesham in 1939. Can anyone recommend how to find more about him? I can't find a marriage, death, children or anything else.

Thanks ;D

There are several people with that name in English records, including at least two born in 1908 per the Probate Calendar. Do you have a precise birthdate?

The one in Evesham was a doctor not a dentist (per medical directories 1940 and 1942).

He was born 25th July 1908.

Therefore it would appear that the above death is correct (as per the date of birth)

In the 1930's James is the House Surgeon at Cheltenham General Hospital. There are numerous newspaper articles on his cases.

He's not listed in UK Dentist Registers up to 1942 so presumably was never a practicing dentist. He must have gone straight on into medical school (registered 1926, qualified 1932).

Thank you so much. I'll look up the paper articles. Any sign of a marriage??
Would a house surgeon have been quite a respectable job back then? It obviously still is but would it have been specialised in the way surgeons are now?

Perhaps he never was a dentist. He was only 18 in 1926!

Are your dates correct?
You have said he was born in 1908 and graduated as a dentist in 1926.
Surely he couldn't be qualified as a dentist at the age of 18?

There is a newspaper record of him as a pupil of Morgan Academy gaining a bursary to University College Dundee in 1926.

There are newspapers articles from the late 1920's (Dundee Courier and St Andrews Citizen) that indicate that he studied medicine at St Andrews.

No he was just starting unimin 1926. I made a mistake. I'm guessing I wouldn't be able to see if he had children as they could still be alive??

I think the supposed dental qualification must be a misunderstanding. A red herring.

You can glean information about his medical career from the medical directories on Ancestry and also from the snippets on Google Books. https://goo.gl/M9aXoR

I would be tempted to purchase James' will to see who the beneficiaries were.

There's a public tree on Ancestry which has him marrying Pamela Joan Hide (now deceased) in 1941.

FreeBMD.org.uk may have any marriages for the children.
Plus any children they may have had.

RootsChat rules prevent us from naming living, or potentially living, people.

You can find the names of the children easily enough on Ancestry via an exact search for people named Robertson born (say) 1946 plus or minus 5 years with mother's name Hide. We can't publish them here.

You could also contact the owner of that public tree.
