Title: Nurse Family Norfolk - Northumbria
Post by: Carlily on Tuesday 22 August 17 20:57 BST (UK)
Dear all the NURSE family members on this website - my maiden name is Nurse. My grandfather was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne. His father allegedly moved from Norfolk to Northumbria/Newcastle and followed the mines. My grandfather moved to South Yorkshire via Stoke On Trent. It looks like he had 5 sisters and brothers.

Any help with this would be great.

Hello Carlily

Welcome to Rootschat.

If you are looking for more information about your grandfather's family, some full names and years of birth would help us to find them.

We can then look for your grandfather and his family through the BMDs and census records.

From Carlily's other post:

'My grandfather was called William Nurse - married to Lillian Nurse nee Randal/Reynolds. They lived in South Yorkshire. I was born in Ireland - my father was called Thomas - he has a brother Michael and 2 sisters. I know all my cousins in Yorkshire but have found it difficult to get information on where my grandfather's brothers and sisters lived. '

I can see a marriage of a William Nurse to a Lilian Windle in Rotherham in 1927, but no Randal/Reynolds (and not Michael, but a Thomas)

Added:
Unless he is a William Michael, and there are several more births for possible siblings.

There is a Lilian (Lillian) Waites (1909) in 1939 register with a William Nurse, 1903, in Rotherham.

There is a marriage in Rotherham in 1972 for a Lilian Nurse and Leonard Waites.  Also a death in Rotherham in 1978 for Lilian Waites born 1909, and a birth for a Lilian Windle in Rotherham in 1909.

There is a death for a William Nurse born 1903 in 1962, Rotherham.

There is this birth for a William NUrse:

William Nurse mmn Smith

Fits with grandfather's father originally from Norfolk:

(the 1911 that says Norse)

Marriage 1892 Rotherham?

The Lillian you mentioned is my grandmother. I was told she had 3 differing surnames as a result of the Pensions act of 1903 and families registering.

I do remember my cousins telling me that Windle was one of the surnames of my grandmothers family.

I can confirm that William Nurse was my grandfather born in 1903. He was a very tall handsome man. Apparently with fairish hair and blue blue eyes.

This is William's birth, then:
William Nurse, mmn Smith  born 1903 March quarter, in Tynemouth

You can then search for siblings born with surname Nurse, mother's maiden name Smith on GRO website, with that link I gave you to the census to help find the family.

This family in 1901
Thomas Nurse age 32 born Norfolk
Emma Nurse   26 born Rotherham  furnaceman copper factory (?)
Thomas Nurse   5  Rotherham
Emily Nurse   7  Rotherham
Annie Nurse   3   Willington Quay
Class: RG13      Piece: 4798    Folio: 70     Page: 20

so probably this marriage:

Marriages Sep 1892
Thomas Nurse     Rotherham   9c  911
Emma Smith   Rotherham  9c  911

Marriage certificate for name of Father?

This looks a possible for 1891 census:
James Savory   54  Walsingham, Norfolk
Mary A Savory   59  Whitsunsit, Norfolk
John C Savory   20   Rawmarsh, Yorkshire
Thomas Nurse   23  nephew  Weben  Norfolk

This might be Thomas in 1871:
John Nurse   60  Weybourne, Norfolk  widower  fish driver
Sarah Nurse   21  daughter   Weybourne, Norfolk
Agness Nurse   6  grand daughter  Weybourne, Norfolk
Thomas Nurse   3  grandson  Weybourne, Norfolk

He might be in Holbeach Union workhouse in 1881.

Possibly this birth:
Thomas Nurse  mmn Holland
GRO Reference: 1868  December quarter in Holbeach.

Marriage of parents ?:
Marriages June quarter 1863
 Elizabeth Holland    Holbeach    7a   577
Richard Nurse        Holbeach    7a   577

only I cannot see a Richard Nurse with a father John.

Have you tried to find your family in the censuses, and have you considered buying some certificates for confirmation?

Added:
On the 1881 census there are 6 Nurse children in the workhouse
Robert Nurse  15  Sutton St Edmund
Thomas           12  Sutton St Edmund
George               9   Sutton St Edmund
Fanny             7      Sutton St Edmund
Hannah           5    Sutton St Edmund
Mary              3  Gadney Hill

NO
Have mixed up 2 families.  Can find Robert and Thomas from 1881 above together in 1871, so different Thomas to that with his grandfather in 1871.

Emily Turner married Thomas Nurse late 1861 so is still with her Parents in 1861 Census.

Sadly she died young so explains why Children Agnes/Thomas are with Grandfather John Nurse in 1871 Census

Death Reg Emily NURSE 1869 age 27
Buried Burial Date:   11 Nov 1869
Burial Place: Weybourne, Norfolk, England

I will just find Thomas Nurse now and will wrap this saga up :D

Hi chempat,
Yes that is very possible and I may have misread when/what time when she was last on and saw all the info we posted.
( I am in a different time zone)

I apologise if that is the case to you Carily.

Its not how I usually am but have had a lot of people not reply lately and had a bad day at work!

Keep the queries coming carily as there are many very helpful people here on all Rootschat Boards.

Hi to the Nurse family tree. Just to update you. I went to Newcastle a few weeks ago and visited North Shields where my grandfather's family live. I knocked on the door at the house the family lived in, in 1911. I also visited Linkskill Community centre where I found my grandfather's brother's name on the WW1 memorial garden wall. his name was spelt Nourse.  He died in the 1ST WW. It was an emotional journey.

Hi Carlily....Why don't you try this website   wwwdotDonaldfamilydotcodotuk
There is a mass of info regarding the Norfolk Nurses , particularly the Weybourne link, back as far as the mid 1600s.
