In the 1901 census, I find Martin DEEGAN, age 87 (!), widower, living with his son, James, aged 36, bachelor, in Rahandrick Upper, Grantstown, Co. Laois. I believe this to be the father who was baptized 1814 in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, married Margaret Delany in 1845, also in Castlecomer; and son James, baptized 1862 in Ballyadams, Co. Laois.
I am unable to find the death of father Martin. Given his age, he seems likely to have died not very long after 1900, but in IrishGenealogy I cannot find him. Can any of you?
-
No sign of him with James in 1911 and the house is now listed as James' so likely died between the census but James may not have registered the death.
Interesting that James in 1911 is living with his widowed neighbour while his own house is left empty.

wonder would there be any deeds or leases for change of ownership though Lawrence Cummin's seemed to be the owner in 1901

Thank you, Dathai, for suggesting using the change of ownership to find a clue to the death of Martin Deegan. However, being a Dutch amateur genealogist, with little experience in Irish genealogy, I am at a loss to determine how to go about this. Any suggestions are welcome.

First of all you need to find where Grantstown is....then where Death would have been Registered.
You will note the district dissolve started 1887, and townlands assigned to Roscrea & Urlingford
Then allow for name to spelt Deegan, Degan etc.
Then look for ALL Martins whose Deaths were registered between 1901 and 1911 at Roscrea
Then look for ALL Martins whose Deaths were registered between 1901 and 1911 at Urlingford
on irishgenealogy, use no Surname!!
See if you can find him there. I looked but prefer if you check for yourself.....

Hi Hallmark,
Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, but I could not find anyone resembling Martin Deegan, born 1814, in the two lists you linked to. The 1901 census has him (correctly) 87 years of age; I saw no one of that age or older. What do I do wrong?
-
it was his Death I referred to... as in "Death results for Martin of Roscrea from 1900 to 1911....."
-
Sorry, I still do not understood. I readily admit I know little of Irish pronunciation, but I fail to find a name similar to DEEGAN and of the appropriate age. Could you please tell me which one in the list you think is "my" Martin Deegan?
-
IF his death was Registered it should be in Urlingford or Roscrea.
I did not see it!!
-
So....did he have other children and died with them somewhere else??
-
Yes, he did have other children, but at age 87 living with his unmarried son, it seems somewhat unlikely that he moved. However, his other children are:
Thomas, bapt. 1846 Ballyadams, Co. Laois
Ellen, bapt. 1849 Castlecomer. Co. Kilkenny
William, bapt. 1850 Ballyadams
John, bapt. 1853 Ballyadams
Ellen, bapt. 1857 Ballyadams
Martin, bapt. 1860 Ballyadams
and James, bapt. 1862 Ballyadams, with whom he lived in 1901.

Ok, all in same area so very possible his death was not registered
