Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would be heading to the LMA in the near future? I live in Australia so am unable to do the research myself but am looking for some records from Clerkenwell Prison/Middlesex House of Correction "List of Prisoners Tried" Reference Code: MJ/CP/B for 1855/56.
I am looking for an ancestor Mary Ann STOW who according to the burial registers of the Victoria Park Cemetery, Hackney, state she died in the House of Correction on 14 May 1856, aged 51.
Mary Ann Stow was born in 1804 in Greenwich to parents John Stow and Mary Beaver.
I know Mary Ann (dressmaker) was convicted of larceny in Greenwich (stealing linen, cotton, etc) in October 1844 with the sentence of 1 year. This trial appears on the Old Bailey Online records. She then appears in the 1851 Camberwell Surrey Census - lodger, dressmaker at 5 Little Orchard Row with Spong family.
Unfortunately I can't find any further convictions or newspaper articles about her later conviction (found plenty on the 1844 conviction), but she must have been convicted at some stage to have died in the House of Correction in 1856.
Any help would be most appreciated.
cheers

Hi Michelle
Chatters who can visit and do look-ups in and around London are few and far between.
There is one chatter who goes for their own research when the LMA opens once a month on a Saturday.
If they have time, they have a very short list of look-ups they may be willing to do for others.
Hopefully they will see this and reply.
If not I'll send them a pm and see if anything can be done for you but you might have a bit of a wait.

Thanks, very much appreciated.

Didn't have any joy with this, I'm afraid
First of all the microfilm was missing but they allowed me to look at the originals
Unfortunately, I didn't see a reference to her in 1855 or 1856

Oh, thats annoying. Really appreciate you looking for me though. Thanks so much. regards Michelle

The burial record doesn’t specify which House of Correction, and there were several in use at that period. She’s equally likely to have been in the Westminster House of Correction (also known as Tothill Fields), because after 1850 this was solely for women and juvenile prisoners. But unfortunately no registers survive for Tothill Fields in the 1850s, so that suggestion isn’t much help to you.
LMA’s information leaflet on prisons may give you more ideas ...

Should be no problem, but I can't see a death registration!

Neither could I to start with. But it's probably this one, as shown on FreeBMD. St in the death register may have been misread as H by GRO indexers.
Jun Qtr 1856
HOW Mary Ann
Clerkenwell 1b 317
The GRO online index shows her as Mary Ann HOUR, aged 51.

Well found!
Let's hope the name mix up wasn't by the cemetery!

If she was really HOW, that might explain why Steve didn't find her in the prison register.

Thanks so much for finding her in the death regs. No wonder I couldn't find her under STOW! Any other help on how to find her criminal conviction would be most appreciated as I can't find her on any of the Criminal Registers or in the newspapers committing her crime!
cheers

The point is well made by John, that the cemetery record could be wrong, and that this lady was really named Mary Ann HOW, and that she is not the Mary Ann Stow you are looking for.

Aye, there's an index for each week grouped by surname initial. Only checked the 'S' ones
