Title: Joseph Anderson b. 1823 & Ancestors
Post by: Ames1122 on Friday 25 August 17 01:18 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for help to find my great x3 grandfather's info and his parents and so forth.

His name was :
Joseph Anderson
B. 1823 Ireland (Tyrone or Armagh)
D. 1907 Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
m. Margaret Nixon
B. 1830 Ireland (? Which county)
D. 1906 Wentworth, Ontario, Canada

His parents were:
Thomas Anderson
B. 1782 County Tyrone, Ireland
D. 1869 Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
m. Betsey? Unknown from Ireland

Any help or insight on this or even photos would be greatly appreciated  :)

Thank you in advance!

Amy

Do you know when and where Joseph Anderson and Margaret Nixon married?

Unfortunately I dont.  :(

Margaret Nixon's father I know his name was James Nixon born in Ireland in 1795, not sure what county and not sure of her mother's name.

From what I have Joseph was born
Nov. 1, 1823 ?, In Ireland.
Margaret was born about 1830 or before.

They had 9 children:

Josiah b.1849, Thomas b.1850, James b.1853, Mary Ann b.1859, Sarah b. 1861, Margaret Matilda b.1863, William Francis b.1865, John b.1869 and Isabella Rowena b.1871.

Joseph's father Thomas was born around 1782 in County Tyrone, Ireland. His death might be July 6, 1869. All I have is a name Betsey for his wife born around 1794, Ireland. However not sure if her information is correct.

And the only child I have from them so far is my great x3 grandfather Joseph however I'm sure there was more.

I've searched and searched, however maybe I'm not doing it right or I don't have access to the records.

Thank you so much for your response.

Amy!

If they married in Ireland from 1845 onwards in a non-Catholic ceremony there should be a marriage registration which means you should get residences for bride & groom as well as their fathers' names & occupations. The lack of such a record (assuming they weren't Catholic) means the marriage is more likely to have taken place in Canada.

Details on Family Search are a bit different than what you posted-
Elizabeth born 1855 (death certificate) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JKW2-MLG
William born 1858 (death certificate) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J6M6-4MN
Sarah born 1861 (death certificate) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLGX-L7Z
Isabella born 1871 (birth) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FM39-WPF

Wow thank tou so much for clearong up some of their children.
I'll try and look for their marriage.
I can do that part as I am in canada. More curious about their Irish families and roots.
I'll try and search and keep you updated if I find a marriage.

Much appreciated!

I've searched all over familysearch and other sites. The only possibilities for Ireland that I found were:

Margaret Nixon
Christened: June June, 1824
In Seaforde, Down, Ireland
Father: James Nixon
No mother listed.

And:

James Nixon
Christened: March 15, 1796
In Downpatrick, Down, Ireland
Father: John Nixon
Mother: Anne

And a possibility:
On a West Flamborough, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada census there's a James Nixon that is 75 yes old in 1871 he's listed as 75 yrs old living with an Eliza Nixon who is also 75 yrs old and born in Ireland in 1796.

Wentworth was the town my ancestors were living in on ontario so that part is correct for sure.

Does this help to search for information in Ireland?

I have no idea how to go forward to verify.

1861 Census of West Flamborough has Joseph and Margaret living next door to a John and Elizabeth Anderson, both born in Ireland.  John is likely a brother to your Joseph.  Have you checked into info about him in the hopes of getting a better clue about where the family was from?

1851 Canadian Census (actually taken in early in 1852; ages shown are as of next birthday) as Joseph and Margaret with two young children, with Thomas and Betsey living with them.  On the same page are John and Elizabeth with their young children as well.

Hi thanks so much for your reply!
I can't see the addresses or family members or ages when I try and look them up on ontario censuses.

I don't know where in Ireland Thomas and Betsey were from or Betsey maiden name or their children's names. Don't know their death dates in ontario.

I've tried looking through all the cemetery lists in Hamilton and can't find them.

Don't know where Joseph and John were born in Ireland but I'm sure your correct on that their brothers o thank you for that.

I cannot see the addresses they were living at in those censuses either. That's why I'm stuck.  :(

They were living in Flamborough West Township in Wentworth County, not in Hamilton (at the time).  Joseph and Margaret seem to be buried in Christ Church Anglican Church (Bullocks Corners), altho' I can only seen the index:

I believe this is the church:

https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Place:Bullock%27s_Corners%2C_Wentworth%2C_Ontario%2C_Canada

Most of the surviving census for Wentworth have been transcribed here (free):

http://www.geneofun.on.ca/db.php?database=ogwcensus&template=ogwcensus-coWTW.html&search=YRCODE&searchmode=s&find=WTW1911&sort=TWP

Otherwise, you can see the original images (also indexed) at familysearch.org or Ancestry.

You can see an 1859 map of Wentworth County here (with the property owners/tenants noted):
