No - you are trying to find the death of Mary Ann Wood
then was on census in birmingham in 1871 along with her children christopher has gone by then
Deserted her or died? Is she shown as a widow in 1871 and 1881?
In the absence of a death - have you looked to see if she re-married?
-

No - very much dependant on how the vicar asked the question. If they just asked for fathers name then that's what went on the cert if no more info was volunteered by the bride.
Have you looked for a death for Christopher? Is Mary a widow in 1871 as you say he is not in household at that time.
EDIT
Yes - she is a widow in 1871
-
yes she down as a widow and there a christopher wood down in april 1869 which would tie in with 1871 census
