Title: tracking down Remuera,Auckland warhero Sgt M.J.Cronin
Post by: Ad van Zantvoort on Thursday 31 August 17 07:40 BST (UK)
For my research I trying to get in touch with the relatives of Sgt Maxwell Joseph Cronin RNZAF. At the age of 21 he took part in a Wellington Bomber crew(57 Squadron) as a second pilot before he get his own crew. On the 27th December 1941 the aircraft was shotdown over Someren and almost the entire crew killed.  It is my intention to erect a small token near the crashsite in memory to this crew and I would like to get in touch with the relatives of the crew. I am in touch already with three crew relatives. Max is the son of E.D.W.Cronin and of Mary Florence Cronin of Remuera, Auckland.NZ. Max is buried along with his comrades at Eindhoven General Cemetery (War grave section) in The Netherlands.

In the 1914 Electoral Roll there is a Marie Cronin, spinster and Bartholomew Cronin - school teacher, living with Edward Denis Joseph Cronin, chemist, and a Mary Cronin married. All at Saltburn Road Takapuna.
Edward's third middle name doesn't match with the third initial you gave and Mary Jane doesn't match with Mary Florence.

According to the Probate documents for Edward Denis Joseph CRONIN, his wife Mary Florence CRONIN stated that their only children were > namely, Patricia Barbara CRONIN and Maxwell Joseph CRONIN
(as of 1927 the children were aged 11 and 6 years respectively).

Will add Probate link next post.

1919 Edward Denis Joseph and Mary Florence are at 249 Hastings Street Napier. There are other Cronins at different addresses bit none of those living with them in 1914.
Edward Denis Joseph is on the  New Zealand Army WWI Reserve Rolls, 2nd Division in 1917 when he was living in Napier.

The Bartholemew Cronin and Mary Jane Cronin were married according to Bartholemew's cemetery record. Bartholemew died 31 October 1924 age 75. Buried Otahuhu Catholic cemetery
Edward Denis is in the same cemetery with a broken headstone with a corner missing. Edward denis was 42 when he died 1927. I wonder if Bartholemew was his father?

As mentioned in above article, Maxwell CRONIN was the Grandson of the Hon.  G.J. GARLAND (otherwise George Joseph GARLAND) who served in the New Zealand Parliament.
[NZ Death:   George Joseph GARLAND d. 1950 aged 94 years. ]

The GARLAND line could perhaps yield more "relatives" ???

Hi lancaster103

Mmm ... it's proving a little difficult to locate relatives of this man.  His only sibling (a sister, Patricia Barbara CRONIN, died unmarried and presumably without issue ?).

Now looking to track down his mother's GARLAND family.   Quite a number of online "trees" (at ancestry website) include Maxwell CRONIN's grandfather, George Joseph GARLAND, a New Zealand parliamentarian;  however the information contained doesn't link to any of his children ???  (Seems these "trees" are more of a "name gathering" exercise than anything else.  ;D )

The "manager" of the following, may have further information to share on the family ???

The following may be helpful in locating relatives ?
(At a glance can see that the Will gives names of "nieces" ).

Probate file for Anthony Oliver GARLAND (the brother of Mary Florence CRONIN and uncle of Maxwell Joseph CRONIN).

Probate record (with annexed Will) for Agnes Blanche COOKE.  (Agnes was the sister of Mary Florence CRONIN, and aunt of Maxwell CRONIN).

It names her children (two of whom appear to be the "nieces" named in the Will of Anthony Oliver GARLAND - see my earlier post.)

Another Probate file - this is for Marjory Scouller GARLAND, spinster of Auckland - died 1950.
[Her name is spelled as "Marjorie" / "Margery" in various records - with Marjory being correct as attested by her brother. ]

Marjory's Will was written in 1939 and "her nephew, Maxwell Joseph CRONIN" was named as a beneficiary of her residual estate.

Hi again lancaster103

Returning to the above link to CRONIN family ... this one is probably worthwhile you making contact with.  ;)

There seems to be additional information in a "tree" published on ancestry.com. (by presumably the same person ? )
> at ancestry (Public member trees) search on " Bartholmew" +  "CRONIN" + died "new zealand".
[The tree is named as "ao'sullivan" ]

It has information for Eileen Agnes CRONIN (LINCOLN) (paternal aunt of Maxwell CRONIN) - and the wife of Frank LINCOLN.    It named their two (now deceased) sons.
According to the Will of Frank LINCOLN who died in 1948, he had 2 sons and 4 daughters.

None of the children were named in the Wills of Eileen Agnes LINCOLN (d. 1928) or Frank LINCOLN (1948).

Hi lancaster103

Well such an awful lot of information now placed in this thread   ;D... and I for one am guilty of "dumping" much which probably seems somewhat irrelevant.  It is though intended as a "means to an end".

Many of the people mentioned in the Wills of Maxwell's family members, are now also deceased and it's not easy to find the next generation.

My recommendation (> and to spare you having to wade through all the probate files etc.) would be for you to make contact with the two "Wikitree" people who have links to the GARLAND and CRONIN families.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Scouller-35
GARLAND family

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cronin-670
CRONIN family

If they are unable to assist, then there are still some other "avenues" we can look to.

Good luck.   :)

Death notice received for Patricia Barbara CRONIN (known as Pattie).

Confirms that she died @ Auckland on 20.10.1996, "daughter of the late Roy* and Florence and sister of the late Max Cronin".

Cremated @ Purewa Cemetery, so the records are incorrect in showing the name as Patricia Margaret.

*As stated.
