Hi Hydes

Welcome To Rootschat  :)

I think Alexander's mother's name was Janet/Jessie Rennie. His birth entry indexed here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQBZ-YFX  The original image of his birth reg. you can view on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Some other children to this couple include Margaret 1856 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ8Q-WLG and William 1857 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQPY-CLN

1861 census entry for this family here:

James Wilkie 37 coal miner b. Govan, Renfrew
Janet Wilkie 36 b. Govan, Renfrew
James Wilkie 14
Janet Wilkie 9
Willm Wilkie 3
Alexr Wilkie 6 Months b. Old Monkland, Lanark
Hugh Mckenzie 16

Address: Bredisholm Hugh Row, Old Monkland Western District

Monica

Added: Possible death for mother Jessie Rennie/Wilkie, aged 63 in 1894 in Old Monkland (Western District).

From 1901, big family for Alexander and wife Mary Shaw:

Alexander Wilkie 41
Mary Wilkie 37
James Wilkie 18
Alex Wilkie 17
William Wilkie 15
John Wilkie 14
George Wilkie 13 b. Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
Mary Wilkie 11
Jessy Wilkie 6....her death reg indexed as Jessie Rennie Wilkie, 1994 in Dumbarton (aged 99!).
Hugh Wilkie 4
Lizzie Wilkie 3
Sutherland Wilkie 11 Months...died 1984 in Ballieston.

Address No 5 Pit Workmen's Houses, Old Monkland Western District

The 1911 census will let you confirm how many children Alexander and Mary had in total. Possibly a couple more born just after 1901? A Daniel and an Allan?

Monica

Added: Possible death for Mary Shaw/Wilkie aged 74 in 1939 in Old Monkland (Western District).

George Wilkie (b: 1889 - d: 1968??)
Hellen Strike (b:1890 - d: ??)
Parents of:
Alexander Wilkie
George Wilkie
William Wilkie
James Wilkie
Richard Wilkie
John Wilkie (b: 1924 - d: 1969)
Helen Wilkie
Elizabeth Wilkie

Some possible death where mother's maiden name is given as Strike

George Wilkie 1976 in Ballieston, aged 62.
Sarah Ellen 1981 in Ballieston, aged 61.
Richard Wilkie 1982 in Ballieston, aged 70.
William Strike Wilkie 1985 in Coatbridge, aged 63.
James Wilkie 1990 in Ballieston, aged 73.

Mother was Sarah Ellen rather than just Helen? There is a possible death for a Sarah Ellen Strike/Wilkie in Glasgow in 1966. Age at death 76.

Wow thankyou so much!!  Not  100% sure about Helen Strike do believe parents could have been Richard Strike (b:1850 - d: ??) And Ellen Rose (b:1857. Do you know anything about john Wilkie and his brothers and sisters?

Best way for you to try to confirm details would be to check some records on Scotlands People. The marriage of George Wilkie and Ellen Strike shows in 1909 in Old Monkland (Western District). This would let you confirm her parents' names with confidence.

I think that Ellen, as we are seeing in the likely death registration for her, was registered as Sarah Ellen at birth too:

Sarah Ellen STRIKE 1890 - ref 622/2 248 in Shettleston

Likely entry for her with family in 1901:

Helen Strike 43  b. England
William Strike 21 b. Kilmaurs, Ayrshire
George Strike 18 b. Kilmaurs, Ayrshire
Harriet Strike 16 b. Kilmaurs, Ayrshire
Mary Strike 13 b. Shettleston
Helen Strike 10 b. Shettleston
Richard Strike 7 b. Shettleston
Maggie Strike 2 b. Shettleston

Address: 4 James Street, Shettleston

Possible death for Richard Strike in Shettleston in 1893, aged 42. In the 1891 census he shows as also born in England and as working as a Foundry Labourer.

Monica

Added: Possible death for Helen Rose/Strike in Springburn in 1921, aged 62.

.... Do you know anything about john Wilkie and his brothers and sisters?

Unfortunately, searching into the 20th Century gets harder to do online due to data protection/privacy issues.

The likely death details I added were for the children of George and Ellen were easier to find because they showed up in seaches using the addtional field for mother's maiden name (Strike).

I think this may be my sister-in-laws family.  Her father came from Bargeddie but she has siblings still living in Coatbridge

My great uncle Alexander Wilkie passed away quiet some time ago. He had many brothers and sisters  which I thought maybe your grandfather was one of their children as they liked using the same names. Do you have mind me asking who his parents were?

I have mislaid John Wilkie, son of Joseph Storey Wilkie and Marion Black. He was born in Airdrie on 11 March 1830, and baptised there on 4 April 1830.

He emigrated with his parents and siblings to North America. I have them all in the 1850 census in Orange, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

His parents and siblings all returned to Scotland and are enumerated in Airdrie in 1861 and all subsequent censuses, but John is not there. Did he stay in America?

It must be a different family. My uncle thinks my papa was cousins with that side of your family but not sure. I didn’t realise there was other wilkies in coatbridge I just seen the names and assumed it was a same relation as my family

Dont believe these are any of my side as i dont have any one named Joseph, however I have not gone back that far yet

No, probably not. Joseph's father John was a mason in Airdrie, New Monkland, but I have not found out where he came from; he could have been from Coatbridge, Old Monkland. The name Joseph is from John's wife's family, not from the Wilkie side.

Do you know if your John Wilkie had a brother James?

I don't know.

He named his eldest son James, however, and the name James doesn't occur in his wife's family.
