Hi,
I am trying to track down two ancestors Andrew & Timothy Sullivan, who were born near Skibbereen, Co.Cork Ireland. Andrew was born in 1845 and Timothy was born in 1858. Family lore has it that one of them (not sure which one) went to Australia, and one went to the USA, but possibly Canada first. My mum recalls letters and photos coming from Australia which gives some credibility to the family lore, but I am not sure where to start my search. Their father would have been Daniel Sullivan and their port of departure would have been Queenstown, Co.Cork.
I would be grateful of any suggestions as to where to begin my search. :)
Thank you
Cath

Cath, what was the lads' mother's name?
There are three deaths in QLD for a Timothy with father Daniel, mothers Honora Leyhane, Johanna O'Mahoney and Maria Cashel.
No listing for an Andrew with father Daniel.

Hi Jamjar,
Thank you so much for taking the time to look for me. I have my fingers crossed here as I think you may have hit jackpot.... Johanna O Mahony was their mother :) :). Timothy's date of birth was 4 April 1858 but I know they sometimes changed these dates! Andrew was Nov 1845. (cant find the date to hand :-[ ) As Sullivan is quite a common name I felt it could be like looking for a needle in a haystack! :) :)
Thank you again

May I suggest that Qld BDM online index does NOT show Elsie DOYLE married Daniel SULLIVAN.
I read the index to show that Elsie DOYLE married Timothy SULLIVAN in 1890 and I confirm that the online search option shows the date as 24 November 1890: The reference no. is B14568, the B indicating the marriage was registered in Brisbane.
Qld Marriage certs are usually full of family history info, including first hand information provided by both the bride and the groom about their own origins and their respective parents. You can download historic images of the marriage registration via your plastic card.

I've looked at the Qld immigration list for Sullivan's.
I see only one Timothy with an age that would have him born in 1858:
Timothy Sullivan aged 19 on the Zamora 26 April 1877.
http://www.archivessearch.qld.gov.au/Image/DigitalImageDetails.aspx?ImageId=39692
There is an arrival notice for the Zamora, from Liverpool and Queenstown, and on board is 1 saddler, 2nd column:

Note in his death notice he is said to be working for Butler Bros., saddlers.

Hi,
An Irish surname like Sullivan might sometimes become O'Sullivan, consider both when doing searches. I got caught with my Driscoll family and found they often used O'Driscoll.

I don't think there would be many, unless the unmarried daughters had some children.
It seems Daniel and Timothy Ronald are the only hope.

Hi,
1943 Commonwealth Electoral Roll
The Albion home (Ann street had a name change and became Storkey street).
After the death of the mother, Elsie Sullivan and the death of Ellen Josephine Sullivan both in 1942.
Sullivan, Elsie, jun, Lemington, Storkey street, Albion, bookbinder.
Sullivan, Kathleen, Lemington, Storkey street, Albion, typist.
Looks like that Mary Frances Sullivan had moved by that stage to "Rosebank" 159 Gregory Terrace, Paddington and was a stenographer.
Don't know where Nora/Norah Eileen Sullivan is residing as yet for this year.

Oh Gosh, this is just incredible. Think all my Christmases have come at once :) :).
I wonder if the Florence who was a clerk was male or female? Here in Ireland it can be both which is why I am curious!
Thank you all so so much. The information you are sending on is just amazing :) :)
Cath
-
Hi Cath,
The Electoral Rolls show Florence Sullivan to be female.
I haven't found a birth registration for Elsie junior the bookbinder as yet, Elsie junior first appeared on the 1922 Commonwealth Electoral Roll so her birth must have been around 1900/1901 I suspect.
Gerry
-
Thanks Gerry,
Looking at the dates of birth for all of them, they are all roughly two years apart, thereabouts, but there is a gap between 1899 and 1903 so Elsie must fit in there! Its also a little unusual that there is no one named after Dad Timothy, but maybe Daniel may have been Daniel Timothy :)
Going by the information you sent earlier, it seems as if Nora Eileen and Vincent must not have had children so the likely hood of descendants seems to be diminishing :(. Unless Daniel & Bridget McDade had some.
I really can't thank you enough for all the information :) :)
Cath
-
Cath, why do you think this?
Going by the information you sent earlier, it seems as if Nora Eileen and Vincent must not have had children
Jamjar
-
Jamjar,
Thank you, you have made me rethink, no harm to wake me up ;D ;D
I was thinking of the commonwealth electoral rolls as being census, but I now realise I am totally wrong! :-[ :-[ :-[
