Title: Deli in the 1920's
Post by: iwccc on Sunday 10 September 17 13:37 BST (UK)
Trying to find information on what goods would have been sold in a "Deli" in the 1920/30's in Dee why Sydney, N.S.W.  Would it have been called a "Ham and Beef Shop". As the shop was opposite the beach would it serve pies, sandwiches etc.   Would you be able to get a billy of hot water from such a shop etc.
Love to hear from anyone that can help me fill in what a forebears life was like as a shopkeeper.  I'm guessing that it would be all about serving. customers and not 'self serve'
Any suggestions of what sort of products were available in this era.  Thank you

Are you familiar with Australian newspapers on line - Trove?

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/search?adv=y

For example, search for "delicatessen" and restrict search to 1920-1940?

thanks Hanes tealu,  I have used Trove before and since your suggestion I tried again but to no avail....can't seem to find any information on what a Deli shop sold or was like in the 1920/30's.
Does anyone else have a family that ran a similar business and knows what sort of goods were sold etc?
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply

Does "Deli" mean something specific in 1920/1930's Dee Why Sydney N.S.W rather than simply an abbreviation of "Delicatessen"?

Hi hanes teulu,  No 'deli' is just my shortened form of delicatessen.  The family always said  'he ran a deli business' Regards

Please do consider using Trove's  pictures etc and keyword Delicatessen.  There's photos there that may give you some clues.  http://trove.nla.gov.au/picture/result?q=

Also have you contacted the local government authority for Dee Why, they may have records from that era, or perhaps know of someone involved in collating their local history .

If the shop was in a strip of shops opposite the beach, then perhaps you could research the strip to determine what was sold in the other shops, to eliminate some of the items on your list.

An article about the types of goods in a deli.
The Journal (Adelaide) 31st Jan1920 http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/213321792 (3rd column)
Concerning Chic
.... Another shop that roused my admiration is called "Ye Savorie," and devoted to everything in the way of delicatessen, such as caviare, Indian pickles, and luxuries of that kind. Garlic sausages for sandwiches, great pink hams, and innumerable attractive edibles fill up a shining white-painted window, into which an immacuately white clad shop assistant dashes, at intervals, a long silverer harpoon, that reaches dainties in the very farthest corner of the window. There is nothing chic about garlic sausages, but the whole establishment is chic in its own line.

Hi Iwccc,

I notice you are online at the moment (green light lit up), perhaps you could confirm if the information posted in these replies is helpful, or are you looking for the owners/operators before and after Charles Woolnough ?

Hi, Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions regarding a Deli shop at 11 The Strand,Dee Why. I am actually seeking to find information about James Dargavel Copland who I am led to believe rented the shop after Albert Charles Woolnough.   James would have gone there in the 1930/40's and stayed on at that shop until he retired in the 1950's.  Can't seem to find a reference anywhere to the shop being "No.11"
I would love to find a photograph of the shop also.  Tried various ideas but so far no answer. I have managed to get an aerial shot of Dee Why Beach and can just make out The Strand and possible placement of No.11.
thanks again everyone for helping

Thanks Hanes tealu  -  Am I right....is the word "Woods" the name of the person wanting help.
If this is so that means that James Dargavel Copland would not have been in the shop until some time after 1937.
