Title: Marriage certificate query
Post by: jasiain on Saturday 16 September 17 11:43 BST (UK)
On my great grand parents marriage certificate it states they were married in Ballymena registry office.
On the other certificates on the page the registrar states the other couples as married by license but on my grandparents it states by certificate.
Could anyone enlighten me as to the difference between the two.Thanks.

Hi jasiain,
I have just googled "what does married by certificate mean?" and there are a few answers. The first one is a reply on the Who do you think you are forum which basically says that the couple have decided to marry other than in a Cofe church. The certificate enables them to marry in a non conformist church that is not licenced to perform marriages.

The distinction between certificates and licences is set out in the original legislation, viz:  An Act for Marriages in Ireland; 7 & 8 Vict. c.81

Note that it was this Act that started the GRO, and civil registration.
