Hi all,
Help needed please.
I have a Joseph Ribbans born abt 1837 Bradfield Essex (s/o Robert Ribbans & Sarah) in my tree and I'm having trouble in finding him in the censuses for 1881,91,1901 and also his marriage about 1860 to Jane ???? (also born in Bromley Essex) as his children appeared to be bapt. from 1862,65,67,69 all in Newington, Surrey.
In the 1871 census for Stoke Newington, he is with his wife Jane (both aged 36)
I have found a possible death regis. for Joseph in jun1/4 1909 in West Ham Essex but not sure if this is him.
Apart from this census I'm unable to find anything more on this couple.
Can anyone throw some light on this couple please?

Yes! Daughter Jessie Maria is listed as GARNER on FreeBMD births.
There's an entry in All London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, 1659-1930 results(A*try) for Jessie Maria GARNER with mother Jane. The name Ribbans has been struck through and replaced with GAMER or GARNER.

Joseph Gaymer bach married Isabella Thompson widow at Bradfield on 5 oct 1830 wit John Taylor and Eliza Winney.
Perhaps she was also called Lucy

:) :)
Thanks for taking it one step further,John!
As for the children of Robert and Isabella,I think maybe the 7 year old Isabella was born as GAYMER as well.
GAYMER, ISABELLA mmn HOWLETT
GRO Reference: 1843 J Quarter in TENDRING Volume 12 Page 265
Charity and Elijah seem to be registered as RIVENS:

Thank you all very kindly for your help.
I have managed to find them in the 1891 census on F/Search. Like you all I always thought Bromley was in Kent but as you now know there is a Little & Great Bromley in Essex so it seems plausible for them to have met there.
This Joseph did have a brother Elijah - married Ellen Berry in Rotherhithe in 1859 and they had a son David born about 1863
He also had a sister Charity Lucy "Rivens" born Tendring Dist 1838
All were the children of Robert Ribbans and his first wife Sarah (nee Barber) who died in 1842.
Robert then "teamed" up with an Isabella (nee Howlett, Thompson, Gaymer) and no marriage has been found todate.
In 1844 there is a birth for an Isabella Ribbans in Manningtree Dist. 1844.believed to be a d/o Robert & Isabella.
The 1861 census for a Joseph & Jane Gaymer etc does seem to make sense as Isabella was a "Gaymer" previously.
This is getting interesting and confusing. Isabella Howlett mar. Wm.Thompson 24-10-1820 (died 1828 Bradfield) she then married a Joseph Gaymer in Bradfield, Essex on 5-10-1830 who was buried 1856 Bradfield. They had a Joseph Gaymer born about 1831 but he died 1834 - no other details.
A lot of what I have said above is a repeat mostly of your kind searches. It appears then that Joseph went under his "step-mother's" name of Gaymer.
So where are they from 1891 onwards?
I will have to look again to see if there is more info around.
Thank you all for your valuable help.

from 1841 I think it the other way round. Joseph was born Gaymer, son of Isabella and ?, and took on his step father's name Ribbans. However when officialdom comes calling he has to use his "legal" surname of Gaymer. Joseph is with Isabella on 1841, and not with Robert and Sarah

Hi all,
The mystery deepens. I have now found their marriage entry which says;
20-6-1860 St.Mary Newington, Surrey;
Joseph Gaymer fa, bach, shoemaker, s/o Joseph Gaymer, Farmer to
Jane Oliver fa, sp, d/o William Oliver, Shopkeeper
These details tie in nicely with the 1861 census but why has he changed names back to Ribbans for the 1871 census?
All indications are that he was born abt 1837 Bradfield, Essex the s/o Robert Ribbans & Sarah(nee Barber) who married 8-9-1837 Lawford Essex. Sarah died and was bu. Tenring Dist Mar1/4 1842
Lizzie; have you got baptism records or birth reg for any of the children?
No - all the info I have is taken from the 1871 census
Looking again Joseph is aged 5 in the 1841 census under Joseph & Isabella Gaymer so the comment Mabel has made is the correct one.
Its obvious now that he took the name "Ribbans" from his "stepfather" when his mother met Robert Ribbans.
I will continue searching under Gaymer.
Thanks for all your help.

first 3 births regd in Newington as Gaymer,
-
looks like another child Charlotte reg Q4 1863, but no sign of "Sessie" the youngest, Newington reg dist became St Saviours Southwark abt 1870
-
could be Joseph's death Q1 1902 Southwark, age 68 as Gaymer, age a tiny bit out, but depends on knowledge of informant
-
Thanks Lizzie,
Thats pretty conclusive they are all Gaymer. All I have is;
Jane 1862, Albert Edward 1865, William 1867 & Sessie 1869. Nothing shows in the 1871 for Charlotte.
I have nothing on Joseph as yet but will continue looking under Gaymer.

Jessie maria Gaymer d/o Joseph - bootmaker age 22 married Walter Percy Lewsey Perry on 27 Mar 1891 - looks like "Sessie"
All sts Walworth near Southwark

Edward married Catherine Woodnutt 1896. Edward was a farrier, Jane Gaymer one of witnesses - could be his mother or sister, but I think sister was actually Sarah Jane
added
Catherine was a widow, father John thomas
