Title: Help have hit a brick wall....
Post by: Jamiespans on Monday 18 September 17 21:30 BST (UK)
Hi,

Am at the end of my tether trying to locate the death of my great grandmother and two great aunts.  I have found all the family in Midleton in 1911 census and I know that they were all living in Mitchelstown from around 1918 until the family left Ireland in 1922.  When one of great aunts was alive she said that her mother died in the flu epidemic after the 1st world war and two of her sisters also died before they left Ireland too.  Their surname was O'Sullivan.  I have tried all sorts of variants, wildcards etc, but cannot for the life of me locate any one of them, but found two great uncles deaths that my nan or great aunt failed to mention whilst they were alive.  I have also seached by the christian names and registration area, but again no luck.  So I am hoping that someone may be able to suggest something which I havent considered???

Maybe consider posting a link to the Census so people can see the names of people?

Hi,

I agree with Hallmark and also wonder where you have looked already? Have you looked for Sullivan also?
Where did the family move to? Have you checked that place also just in case the family story is wrong?

Right heres the link to them in 1911

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Middleton_Urban/Railway_Terrace/434751/

The two great aunts I cant find are Mary and Annie.  I have also checked under Sullivan and family story checks out as have photos of my nan and family outside their house in Mitcheltown just after 1st world war and also documents of my great grandfathers that also give address as Mitchelstown too.  I have looked under Irish records on Ancestry, Familysearch and also Irishgenealogy.ie.

My family left ireland in 1922 and moved to Hertfordshire.  The house the family lived in is still in the family today.  My great grandfather died in 1960 and in his newspaper Obit it states that his wife died some 40 years ago.  He is buried with my nan, and two other siblings.

Thanks for the comments, no they are buried in Letchworth, Hertfordshire.  I have ready discounted the death for Mary in 1921 and My great Grandparents married in 1898, Hanora's maiden name was Coughlan.  He got pensioned off from the RIC in 1922 and they left ireland after the troubles started.

....."When one of great aunts was alive she said that her mother died in the flu epidemic after the 1st world war and two of her sisters also died before they left Ireland too....."

"....The house the family lived in is still in the family today......."

So can they not check Cemetery Records for the 2 that died, whatever their names were...

Sorry I mean the house they lived in when they left Ireland and moved to Herts is still in the family.  There seems to be no viewable copy of any cemetery records for Mitchelstown anywhere either.

It would probably help if you posted the Christian names of those who died in Ireland

I found Mary's birth but not Annie's - was she registered with a different name as was Elizabeth Lilly who I think I saw as Elizabeth Johanna?

If you are sure they died in Mitchelstown, I wonder if you could ask local registrar to check? Perhaps there are omissions due to the times.

If she was from Youghal, the Births  might be there, many went home to give Birth....

1911 Census shows:
Mary Josephine 8 yrs
Annie Eveleen 7 yrs
Elizabeth Lilly 6 yrs

Births:
Mary Josephine 8th August 1902 Youghal
Elizabeth Johanna 5th November 1904 Kinsale

As yet, I can't see Annie. Just wondered if she had a different name which might help trace her death.

With "The Troubles" and himself in Police anything is possible.
