Title: Christening Records
Post by: Marytm on Thursday 21 September 17 16:43 BST (UK)
I am trying to find a Christening record for Eric Handley born Oct 1914 .His closest siblings were Christened at St Stephens in Newtown. Birmingham. I can't find any record of his or his brother Percy born 1909 either. They were Church of England faith.
Some of the siblings e.g Leah Norah are on there,so maybe they were Christened elsewhere?I have seen her records on Ancestry.
The Church was demolished after the 2nd WW.It's parish combined with St Mary's at Aston Brook but that has been demolished too.
any help would be gratefully received..

Thanks I thought I had put it on correctly this time!!! I am hopeless with computers.
Parents of Percy Handley were Martha Handley (prev Watts) and Eric was illegitimate I think, Martha Handley and Dad possibly William Frederick Handley.I am trying to find if he was Christened and if so does it name this man as Dad?

Are you saying that you think Eric was the child of a liason between Martha and someone else other than Mr Handley but registered as Handley

Are these birth records rather than christening?
Eric's birth cert says Dad was William Frederick Handley I want to see if this is the same on Christening details. Or was he not christened as he was illegitimate?

They are from the GRO birth registration index.  If his birth certificate states his father was William Frederick Handley then it is likely any christening record would too.  Why do you think he was illegitimate  :-\

I think this may be the answer to my question  :)

Baptism of eldest son
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J9YC-C84

Marriages Mar 1900
Handley    Samuel Arnold
Watts    Martha
Aston    6d   402

Deaths Dec 1911
Handley    Samuel A
age 32
Aston    6d   391

As father Samuel Arnold died before Eric was born he obviously is not a child of that marriage.

She was married to Arnold Samuel Handley who was Dad to all the other children. He died in 1911. Eric was born 1914. I think if William Frederick Handley is real that he may have been a relative of Arnold.
(I have put details on about him before.)
I am trying to find out which William Frederick he is. Maybe it was easy to pretend he was a husband as she would have the same surname?

On Eric's wedding cert he states Arnold as being his deceased Dad.
Martha then marries a Harry Peake 8 yrs later.

Eric's birth cert says Dad was William Frederick Handley

He could be William Frederick Handley or he could be William Frederick (unknown surname)

I see that Samuel Arnold Handley (1878) was also illegitimate  ???

Ooh I never thought of it being a false surname!

Who was the informant on the birth certificate  :-\

The informant was Martha Handley (prev watts) herself. I have been looking on the 1911 census which is closest to birth but is when her husband Arnold was still alive to see if there were any William Fredericks living nearby. There are no obvious William Frederick's but there are 3 Fredericks and 2 or 3 Williams. 1 William is William Jones a "Tool maker" which is what "Dad" was supposed to be but it is a married man with a young child.
Do you think it is very unlikely to be a Handley?
I suppose it is impossible to know... I wish I had questioned my Grandad while he was alive. But I don't suppose he would have liked that.

Unless you can find some sort of proof that maintenance was paid by Erics father I doubt that you will identify him.

How would I check for maintainance ? I doubt she got any as I think some of the kids would be teenage then, possibly earning something?
