Title: Was there a coastguard station in Roker?
Post by: Muffin41 on Friday 22 September 17 15:11 BST (UK)
Henry Alexander Chivers was a coastguard living in Roker, Sunderland, Durham in 1911; at the time he was 30 years old and from 1939 to 1949 when he died he was living in Grimsby, Lincolnshire.

I would like to know if the coastguard stations in Roker and Grimsby had lists of coastguards at the stations.
I would like to know more about Henry Alexander Chivers if possible.

You can see the Roker Coast Guard Station on the 1919 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/440588/558735/12/101064
It opened in 1904.

Thanks again Stan :)

I have been told that most of the coastguards were in the RN before taking on a post as coast guard.

Having looked at his service record I think this is your man : http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7143874 (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7143874). If so he was awarded the British War Medal and the Long Service Good Conduct Medal.

Thank You Martin for finding the right man. 8) The information helps to fill in a few gaps in his lifeline. :D
I have ordered and downloaded the file for my own research.
