Title: Charles Cawte in Gosport, Hampshire
Post by: lynda123 on Sunday 24 September 17 10:01 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone

Could I ask for help in deciphering the age of Charles Cawte on the 1871 census. He has been transcribed as aged 30 but there is an enumerator's pencil mark in the column so the age is not that clear. He is described as a Pensioner, which I think would be unusual for someone who is only 30. His place of birth is not known.
On the transcription he is shown as living with Charles and Amelia Tout, but from the image I think they were neighbours rather than one household. As far as I am aware Charles was not related to the Tout family (Amelia's maiden name was Alford).

Thank you

Lynda

Hi Lynda

RG10 - Piece 1151 - Folio: 43 -  Pg 12

I'd definitely say he is listed as 30.  You can see quite enough of the number to know it's not a 5.

"Pensioner" is nothing to do with age, necessarily. He could be pensioned from the Army?

He is listed as a lodger in the Tout household. The Touts, George and another lodger, all live in the same dwelling. The two lodgers have filled in their own Household schedules, and each likely will have their own room.  They may not have stayed there long  (as opposed to a boarder).

Cheers
AMBLY

Many thanks Ambly.
At least if we are happy with the age I can try to track him down, using an age range. Although it says place of birth unknown a lot of mt family came from Hampshire so I will start from there.
Thank you for taking the time to look

There's a David Cawte born Botley Hampshire who has a wife Elizabeth and son Charles 9 in 1851.

Charles is born Finsbury and is not with parents in 1871 - just a possible.

Hi Millipede,
Many thanks for that info. The census you found is a possibility although if he and his family lived in Croydon I wonder why he moved to Hampshire? I cannot find him with David and Elizabeth in 1861 so maybe he ran away to sea.  Anyway, there are a couple of candidates in my tree so I have made a note on both of them to look at the 1871 entry.
Thank you for taking the time to help me
