Title: William & Lucy Raby Lancaster 1900's
Post by: Marmalady on Sunday 24 September 17 12:03 BST (UK)
Lucy Annie Cope married widower William Raby in Lancaster in October 1894

In 1901, William is visiting his married daughter Nelly Green in Bolton, but Lucy is not with him

In 1911, Lucy is an inmate in an institution in Lancaster listed as "married"

Lucy dies in Lancaster in 1926

Where was Lucy in 1901 ?
Where was William in 1911?

Can anyone find them -- or a death for William ?

The one in Bolton in 1901 is a widower
Henry Green   Head 41
Nelly Green   Wife 26
Fanny Green   Daughter 19
George Green   Son 17
Maggie Green   Daughter 6
Leah Green   Daughter 5
Harold Green   Son 2
Doris A Green   Daughter 6/12
William Raby   Father in Law Widower 51 Joiner
Maggie J Raby   Sister in Law 17
Edgar G Raby   Stepson 6
RG13/3641/25/42

Looking at the ages, they can't all be Nelly's children.

Did William remarry? I can see one in Manchester in 1911 that could fit.
Same birth place same occupation

Ignore this

In 1911, Lucy is an inmate in an institution in Lancaster listed as "married"

So that means if the Lucy Raby in the workhouse is the correct person, William was telling lies about his status in 1901.
Who are the parents of the stepson Edgar G Raby?

So if the William in Bolton is not the one who married Lucy -- is there another one ?

Who are the parents of the stepson Edgar G Raby?

Looks like he is the illegitimate son of one of the Raby girls:

My gut tells  me that is William in 1911 Census.
He was not free to marry so may have just taken up with Mary and Thomas may be her Son.

Death Reg in Chorlton Reg District Dec 1820 for a William Raby age 72 which fits.
1911 that William above is living in that Reg District.

William & Mary claim to have been married 16 years -- which would be 1895 -- so only a few months after he married Lucy
I can't find a suitable William & Mary marriage -- nor a birth of a Thomas Raby around 1895

So you may well be right, Trish

Did poor Lucy go into the asylum only months after her marriage or have William & Mary fudged their so-called marriage to fit Thomas's age?

I think they fudged it as you say, only 1 child in 16 years of Marriage seems unlikely.

Image of Mary has Mary Jane and I think born Northumberland.
Looked for her and so called Son Thomas in 1901 with no surname, with no luck.

William was not with her in 1901 so I would say Thomas may just be her Son.
