Title: Joining the Army in Radnorshire in 1800
Post by: avrilw on Sunday 24 September 17 13:58 BST (UK)
Hi
I have William Lewis born in Llanbadarn Garreg in 1775. He was a Shoemaker and joined the 6th Battalion of the Artillery in 1800. Somewhere in his travels his wife Mary ( don't know if it was Mary all along though) gives birth to William in 1807, Mary Ann in 1812, then Elizabeth in 1819, and Anthony  in 1822 both in Glascwm where William is still a shoemaker. There may be other children along the way.
Does anyone else have family joining the army from rural Wales at this time? Can I find anything about the conditions they would have encountered? Where would the recruiting sergeants have come from? Any ideas please?

many thanks

Avril
