Hi All,
My first post and would like to find some information on a deceased relative as per above.
George was born in Ashington, Northumberland UK. George served in the Coldstream guards as a Sargeant Major. His approximate year of death was 1988 and lived in the Mill Hill area of London with his with wife Thelma (Mother's name was Ivy).
George was cremated and I think he may have plot at Hampstead cemetery which I am also trying to confirm as I would love to visit to pay my respects.
George also had family in the Sunderland area , I think a sister or close relative called Majorie.
If anyone comes up with anything, I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks in advance for any replies I may get.

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
This is only a possible, we need some idea of when George was born...
London Electoral Rolls 1953
30 Rannoch Road, Hammersmith and Fulham.
George Allison
Thelma J Allison
Edward C Sorrell
Ivy E Sorrell
That would make a marriage in 1948 https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
It may not be who you are looking for of course.
Do any of the names ring a bell?
Cathy

Cathy, thanks you so much. I am bowled over already that is indeed the family. what a great start.
I hope I can get some more information.
Again, thanks so much :)
-
You re welcome :)
There is a probate record as follows
Allison George of 57 Bittacy Hill, Mill Hill, London NW7, died 14 April 1988...
Can t find an obvious birth for George at the moment, if you think the marriage between George and Thelma Sorrell may be correct then the marriage certificate would give fathers names.
Thelma J appears to have been born 1930 so quite young when she married.
Hope this is the correct family, we could be barking up the wrong tree!

Cathy you are 100% correct on family. Again, within two posts I am bowled over.
Thelma was indeed married to George. And Thelma was called Sorrell before marrying George.
I wish I could find out other family members and where George's resting place is after he was cremated.
This is an amazing start though Cathy and thanks so much again.

I have also found out that George had a relation called Marjorie Lindley who was married to an Anthony Lindley that lived in the Windermere are and originated from Sunderland. This is the avenue I want to go down but not finding much at present.
-
Do you believe that Anthony and Marjorie have both died?
The marriage was in 1958 in Newcastle.
Added: Both are probably still alive.

This seems like it could be them. And they may well be alive.
I can't find any further info for them so anything would be great.

OK so can you supply his birth registration 1925?
Keyboard86

I was going to suggest searching the 1939 with that birthdate for George - but will it still be a closed record as death too late?

Yes, I saw the Norfolk one.
This birth may be relevant because of the mmn of Potts, which was the mmn of Marjorie, I think.
Births September quarter 1925
George A Archibald mmn Potts
Added: Birth in Morpeth

Thanks for looking but he was definitely born in Ashington as far as I know or may even be somewhere in Northumberland.

That was definitely not him as he was born up north for sure but thanks so much for looking.

Marriages June quarter 1912
John D Archibald Tynemouth
Elizabeth A Potts Tynemouth
then
Marriages September quarter 1928
John Allison Potts Morpeth
John Allison Archibold Morpeth
Elizabeth A Archibold Allison Morpeth
Elizabeth A Potts Allison Morpeth
-
If the Norfolk one is right then he's George W G Allison - mothers maiden name Garrett born Downham 4b 445
He's with his parents in 1939 so could track their marriage in 1925 to get her maiden name
If you get the marriage cert for George you could rule this one in or out by the fathers name

Why are you sure he was born up north?

100% not the man in question but thanks so much for trying.
-
Why are you sure he was born up north?
He was a Geordie through and through and always said his hometown was Ashington. I can't ever remember him mentioning Norfolk but I could be wrong but I am 99.9% sure this is correct. Thanks for all you help.
-
There are only two George Allisons born in Sept 1925
The Norfolk one which you have ruled out
and
George A Allison mmn Flint - born in Sheffield
-
As for birth. And earlier post that has this : George Allison born 28th July 1925 death June qtr 1988 Westminster, is the closest we seem to have come so far. Thanks so much to everyone that is trying to help.

That's very good and valid points. Damn, this is emotional as hell but so glad I found this site you have all been amazing so far.

For some reason Morpeth rings a bell but cannot think why.

When you said Mothers name Ivy - was that George's mum or Thelmas mum?

I think the George A Archibald is your best bet - I'd send for his birth certificate - and if it matches the date of birth 28th July 1925 then you've got him

Thanks and I have just managed to get the address through the help of someone here.

On the free 1939 register in Ashington are Marjorie A Lindley (Allison) 1936, Elizabeth A Allison, 1895, and John Allison, 1887.
Does that mean that Marjorie must have died?

I'm not to sure to be honest. I think I will write to the address that I have as I know if alive they will be amazed that I remember them and that a relative from the past has got in touch. 👍

There is one more closed record living there - wouldn't be the first time they unlocked the wrong line - and unlocked Marjorie instead of George
My husbands grandfather (who went missing in the 1960s but has never been declared dead) is on there unlocked, when I emailed them they said they must have had evidence he was dead - but couldn't say what it was or have any ideas of what it may have been
-
I did not provide an address in Windermere, just said that they were in Stamford.
Thanks for that information about unlocking the wrong one.
Added:
If the address was The Copse, it was sold in 2011.

Just thought i'd pop on to say thanks as I have had the Archibald/Potts names confirmed, so this gives me more to go on. Archibald was the name of George's mother (Name before marriage was Potts) and father and I am told George's mother married twice. Now to see what else i can find with this info.

If you mean Archibald/Archibold, surely someone just had bad handwriting?
