Hello all,
I think brackets 8 produces a smilie face; not my intention.
I haven't been here in a long time but recently made another Australia connection.
I wonder if anyone on Rootschat is also connected to, or knows about, my Gardiner kin.
(3) Sarah McCalmont married Samuel Gardiner (died 31 July 1962 Perth, Western Australia s/o Samuel) on 27 July 1899 at 2nd Presbyterian Church, Islandmagee. They had 13 children.
(1) Jeanie Gardiner born 15 July 1900
(2) James Gardiner born 13 January 1902
(3) Samuel Gardiner born 7 November 1903
(4) Thomas Hugh Gardiner born 19 May 1906
(5) Robert Gardiner born 1908
(6) Sarah Campbell Gardiner born 7 November 1909
(7) William Gardiner born 7 November 1911 died 11 March 1995
(8) Mary Gardiner born 5 May 1914
(9) Joseph Gardiner born 5 May 1914
(10) Lucinda 'Lucy' Victoria Gardiner born 1916 died 7 July 2008
(11) Victor Gardiner born 13 June 1919
(12) Violet Gardiner born 13 June 1919
(13) unknown Gardiner born after 1923
Sarah McCalmont & Samuel Gardiner, born in Northern Ireland, married 27/7/1899 on the Island of Magee. They moved with three boys to Ardrosson, Scotland. A further 9 children were born there, and the thirteenth child was born in Western Australia. Robartsons of Merredin nominated the Gardiner's to Australia. Samuel and three sons, James, Thomas and Samuel Jr. embarked on the Euripides' & arrived in Albany W.A. 28/7/1922. They proceeded to Nangenan. Sarah and nine children sailed from London aboard the 'S.S. Berrima' on 28 December 1922 and upon their arrival in Australia on 3/12/1923 the family moved to the Wilgoyne area. They had cleared nearly 1000 acres but were forced off by the end of 1929.
(10) Lucinda Gardiner may have married a Thomas Lockley in 1935 at Perth, W.A.
If anyone can connect with this family & is willing to share information I can provide a few documents.
As always any help is greatly appreciated.
J.A.M.

Hi
Hard to be certain about what you have and what you need or whether you are only wanting to connect with relatives etc.
However I will offer a couple of bits in case they are of interest.
Sarah Campbell GARDINER died at the age of 93 in 2002 and was interred Pinnaroo Vallley Memorial Park
Grave number 496
In the grave adjoining is Violet PRYCE.
Grave number 495
Details of these records can be located at http://www2.mcb.wa.gov.au/NameSearch/search.php
Violet GARDINER married Lionel Douglas PRYCE in 1946 (Northam, Reg 57)
There were children.
Violet was involved in an unsavoury episode ::)

GARDINER, Robert John. Husband of Sybil, father of Merle, Jill and Alan. 24 Feb 1998 aged 90 years.

Thanks mollipops,
I checked some of the WA sites & did get some deaths data & army info. Also found that Victor, Joseph & William worked for the railroad.
I had not thought about the White Pages. I shall do that.
Thank you very much for your assistance.

Hi,
Robert (born 1907 not 1908) is my grandfather and Merle my mother.
That is his service record linked above. He died back in 1998 and is buried in Merredin WA, where he lived most of his adult life working for the railways.
Unfortunately I don't know much about his brothers and sisters as I only met Victor at his funeral.
Feel free to contact me
Regards
Steve

Grandad and Granma (Robert and Sybil), I was very fond of Granma, a reserved pleasant nature'd lady who doted on her children and grandchildren. Grandad was quiet and distant, emotionally trouble from the war. He served as a signalman in north africa, was a rat of tobruk, helped defeat Rommel. Winston Churchill shook his hand as he congratulated them on victory in north africa. He then returned to Merredin, where Granma fell pregnant with Mum. Then he served in Papau new Guinea against the Japanese, seeing some ugly action there. A beach landing where his captain was killed behind him aas they were landing, captured Japanese committing Kuri Kuri. He caught Malaria and had to be sent home. After the war his nerves emotions must of been shot, he was hospitalised a number of times. I guess he had post traumatic stress and suffered from this the rest of his life. And of course this heavily influenced the relationship he had with Granma and his kids. But he never turned to Alcohol to ease his mind....

Thanks for that Tim.
Do you recall if there ever was there ever mention of the McCalmont relatives in Northern Ireland?

In your travels have you come across an Oswald George Gardiner who came from London to Fairbridge Farm in 1931. But also a Mavis (?Madis) Gardiner in Pinjarra. Oswald has listed Madis as his NOK at his enlistment time, but as far as we were aware, his marriage to Valmai was his first. So, I am unsure whether Mavis was his "adopted" sister? Or whether there is absolutely nothing there :(

Hi Karen,
I cannot help with the historical side of the GARDINER family.
However regarding Oswald.
On enlistment the index shows that he was was located at Cookernup, WA.
You mention that NOK Mavis GARDINER seems to be at Pinjarra. How do you know this?
Do you have a full record of Oswald's ww2 service file?
He was only 20 or 21 when he enlisted- youngish to be married- and there is not a record of any marriage other than the one to Valmai Joy
GARDINER Oswald G
OSTLE Valmai J
Perth .2855/1953
He is interred with her at Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park.
There were not many Mavis GARDINER's on the electoral roll.
One whose address is Pinjarra, Mavis Ethel GARDINER was married
GARDINER George A
CALLADINE, Mavis E
1931/79
Perth
She and her husband George Andrew appear on the Electoral roll together. So cannot make a connection there.

Hi Everyone J.A.M.
I was recently looking up Island Magee and came across this thread. My name is Ros Booth (n้e Wood) and my grandmother was LUCY LOCKLEY.
My Great Grandmother was SARAH GARDINER who I last remember visiting with my mum Joan Wood (n้e Lockley) and my siblings. We were all young, primary school aged, and GG was bedridden. This was the very early 1970s. She crocheted each of us a different lined handbag, which mum was choked up about because she had debilitating arthritis. We also heard of how our Great Grandfather came to Australia with the oldest sons to farm and clear land before the younger ones came out. Grandma Lucy spent the train trip with her face pressed to the window in sheer awe. They must have lived very hard because their home didnt have flooring, and Sarah had to sweep the packed dirt floor everyday. Im unsure which son it was, but one of them had around 4 children but the story goes his wife left and Sarah raised them as hers.
My grandmother Lucinda (Lucy), married my grandfather Thomas LOCKLEY.
They had 4 children, 3 girls and a boy:
Elsie (Married name Thomas)
- x 3 kids
Joan (Married my father James WOOD, both deceased)
x 4 kids
Roma (Kept former marriage name Fung)
x 2 kids (one relinquished)
Peter
x 2 kids
