Title: William GREGORY, born 1837, Bath (?)
Post by: BAC3 on Monday 02 October 17 20:51 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am struggling to unearth information for William GREGORY after 15/06/1854.

He was sentenced to 7 years transportation on 28/03/1851 which was commuted to imprisonment and he was released early from Parkhurst Prison on 15/06/1854, stating his destination was Bath.   The only relative he mentioned , no mother and father, was his Grandfather, Philip BARTLETT, who lived at 16 Little Corn Street, Bath, but I can find no connection.   The Grandfather appears in 1851 at HO107/1941/111, p.17.

Can anyone help please. ???

In the 1841 census there is Philip Bartlett and family from 1851:
Phillip Bartlett 50  not local
Harriett Bartlett 45   not local
Harriett Bartlett 7
Caroline Bartlett 16
William Bartlett 4
in St James, district 8.

Suggest William Bartlett is William Gregory?

chempat,

Thank you for this post........I had thought he may have used "Bartlett" as an alias, but there is no evidence to this effect.

It does seem from the lack of posts, however, that RootsChat is also finding it difficult to trace Mr. GREGORY 8)

You say you are trying to find info about him after 1854, but are you also seeking earlier information about him?  I see that he's enumerated in the 1851 census (on remand in Bath Gaol) as 14 b Bath.

Is he the William Gregory baptised at St James, Bath on 24 Dec 1837, son of James (labourer) and Mary, of Corn St?

Or Philip and Harriet had older children, one of which married a Gregory and had William? Thus he would be their grandson?

Seeing avm's post - maybe they had a Mary?

My main concern is to create a profile for him after he was released from Parkhurst Prison.......did he or did he not re-offend, for instance, or marry/have children?   The only information gleaned from his convict documentation was that relating to his Grandfather as no parents were mentioned.   However, your help possibly identifying his parents is more than invaluable.   I am grateful and will now research further.

His offending must have started early - I see that before his conviction in the spring of 1851 (for theft of a silver watch, aged 14) he had already served 2 yrs 11 months in Parkhurst Prison for a previous offence.

There's a marriage of a James Gregory and Mary Nash (spinster) at St James, Bath in 1830 - doesn't help make a link to the Bartletts, I'm afraid.

I know this doesn't advance matters, but I was interested to see what his previous convictions were (as cited on his 1851 conviction return).

He had been twice convicted under the Juvenile Offenders Act of 1847 (10 & 11 Victoria cap. 82) whereby children not over the age of 14 charged with simple larceny could be summarily convicted before two Justices.

He had also been convicted as a rogue and vagabond (which may have involved begging or similar).

I feel I should add the following to his convict profile:

He had two co-defendants at his trial in 1851, 52 year old Amelia Pearce (10 years transportation) and 14 year old Benjamin Lacey (7years transportation).   Ameilia Pearce died in Millbank Prison of Bronchitis in 1853 and Benjamin Lacey, also released early from Parkhurst Prison, removed to London, married three times had 8 children, 7 of them step-children, and died when he was aged 50??

Philip and Harriet Bartlett were enumerated as 50 and 45 in 1841, but 70 and 65 in 1851.

Based on the latter ages, they seem likely to be the Philip Bartlett and Harriet Mudford who married at East Coker, Somerset on 5 May 1800.

Children (there must be more in the gaps):

Maria, baptised 12 Oct 1800 East Coker
Caroline c 1825?
Harriet, baptised 23 Dec 1832 St James, Bath
Anne, baptised 15 Jun 1833 St James, Bath
