Wow!!!! Many thanks for this.  I'm always blown away by how people are so generous with their time.  This is plenty.  The only thing that throws me is his place of birth as England, sources led me to believe he was born in Ireland..More digging I think,

Annie I found a John SWANSON on the 1851 Census born Portsmouth, Hampshire of the right age and occupation upholsterer and then I found this advertisement for a John SWANSON who has got himself into a spot of financial trouble.  I haven't found where he was declared insolvent.

I've just found a couple of online trees on a subscription only website which also give John's place of birth as Portsmouth, Hampshire.  Perhaps a researcher has sighted some certificates.

Hi Cando, I think I followed the Portsmouth lead up and it led to a deadend but will check agian.  I think he may have been a sailor at some point so Portsmouth may be significant

Hi Cando, I'm looking to confirm his place of birth in Kilkenny Ireland as per poor relief records and scottish census records.  Cannot find a birth or emigration records....Ta x

His wife has a will which mentions her two daughters and William. No John Donald.

I haven't been able to find deaths for the sons.  :-\

Perhaps you have all the info you require however I cannot see John SWANSON born c1830 on the 1851 English or Scottish census other than John, the upholsterer born Portsmouth and living in Middlesex.  I note that John and Margaret's marriage record shows him to be an upholsterer in 1853 when they married at Glasgow.  And surely not a co-incidence John was an upholsterer in Fitzroy, Aus.

Donald SWANSON is shown as a Chelsea Pensioner on the 1851 census and witness for his dau's 1826 Catherine baptism which is a tad difficult to read, shows Donald's occupation as pensioner something about 79th Regiment.  It may be the occupation of a witness.  If Donald was in the army it may account for John being born in England.  I realise the chn on the 1851 census were born Ireland but it doesn't necessarily follow that John was also. You need to track the movements of the 79th Reg just in case John was still with them.

Where did you find evidence of John SWANSON born c1830 being a seaman.

Do you have John with his parents on any census or other documents?

Hi Cando,

Sorry for the delay.  I have since found Donald's occupation on his son Henry's death.  He is listed as a sargeant in the 42nd foot division.  I had a look at Catherine's birth and it appears the 79th reg is related to a witness by the name of William Swanson!  A brother or father?  I think that you're probably correct that John was probably born whilst his father was travelling with the military.  What a llife they must have had!

.....sorry to answer your other questions.....don't know where the sailor link came from...Portsmouth!!!!  And no I don't have John on any census records, the only link to his parents is his death.
