Hello,
All my attempts to work out this place name in County Waterford have so far failed. It looks like Carrighbrahen based on the letters in other parts of the birth register. I've been on logainm ie to try to find a match and still no luck. Perhaps it has been incorrectly written down.

Can't do a direct link on iPad but there is a Carrigbraghan in the townland of Carrickavarahane on the OSI Mapviewer found under Waterford, Locality. Your one doesn't have a g in it though and might end in hon.

It looks like it may be as you say just looked at the logainm ie database again under townland of Carrickavarahane and it brought back what looks like a match. See attachment. Would you agree ?
It is certainly in the area I expected it to be.

Hallmark you are correct Kilmeaden area. So the other one Sinnan picked I don't think is correct. This guy moved around the County quite a bit. So I now need to get a fix on the parish or townland in the Kilmeaden district that is a fit.

Yes, the District is important which is why I included it instead of having people look at the whole County

Perhaps it has been incorrectly written down.
I've transcribed quite a few Ireland register entries & even on the same page the same townland is spelled differently. I would put this version as Carrigbrahan. Spellings weren't set in stone then & clerks varies in their interpretation.

Hallmark, that looks like you've hit the target with that but my only reservation is why is the registration district shown as Kilmeaden. Is it a case he was living in Waterford City but registered the birth outside? Thinking laterally
Just found this the leper hospital was set up by King John in 1211 or 1212
An HOSPITAL was founded about the year 1211 or 1212, by King John, who incorporate it under the designation of the Master, Brethren, and Sisters of the Leper-house of St. Stephen, and granted the society a common seal. He endowed it with the house and several other buildings in St. Stephen's parish, and the oblations and offerings of that parish with lands at Poleberry without St. John's gate, and with the lands of Leperstown, in the barony of Gualtier, containing 500 plantation acres; also with the tubes of Carrigbrahan.
It again mentions Carrigbrahan a 500 acre plantation hence the tithe record much later. But where the hell is Carrigbrahan ?
-
I understand Hallmark's finding as that the Leper Hospital in Waterford City received the TITHES of Carrigbrahan as income.
Bit of a crossposting, notaninch, sorry.
with the tubes of Carrigbrahan.
;D ;D ;D text recognition software, eh??

Josey see my response post to Hallmark. The leper hospital was set up by King John who gave the hospital land and hence the tithe record shown by Hallmark

1211, that far back perhaps it can be found on the Down Survey

Are you sure. Could be the Registrar was having a moment and completely lost it. I like the Down Survey maps but I could be searching for days and still not find it. There are times when don't know or a vague...in the County of simply is better. I've already spent too many hours on this already. That is not to say that I am really truly grateful to you, Josey and Sinann for your help.

They don't make this family history lark easy for us. His wife was from the Fennor area, so it makes sense. That said Kilmeaden is the other side of the County. Where they lived was Carrigbrahan and maybe William wanted the exercise so walked to Kilmeaden to register the birth.

Don't forget it was State Registration.
I know people didn't travel much but it is perfectly possible for a birth in Donegal to be registered in Co Kerry!
