Title: Please help Cooper/Ando
Post by: iolaus on Wednesday 04 October 17 16:58 BST (UK)
I'm hopinh that writing this out may either help me see what I'm missing and also get rootschatters feedback - either to back up my thoughts, or come up with another idea which will probably be right

Trying to find out about the parents of Mary Elisabeth Cooper born Brynmawr, Breconshire in 1854 (registered Crickhowell)

Her parents are George Cooper and Mary Ann (maiden name Ando)

Her siblings (from the1891 census) births have the maiden name of Ando in the majority of cases -
Frederick (born 1880) has the mmn of Andrews - Frederick is the 5th child out of 10)
Robert (born 1894) has mmn of Audo (I'm guessing this is a transcription error)

Also in the 1891 census there is a 'father' given for Mary Ann - William Cresswell aged 75

There is a birth for a Mary Ando (no middle name) born 1854 in Crickhowell, Breconshire - according to the censuses Mary Ann was also born in Brynmawr, mothers maiden name Hawkins

However I can't find a marriage for George Cooper and Mary Ann Ando - or find Mary Ando on any censuses

But there is a marriage for George Cooper and Mary Ann A Cresswell - could this be them?  How can I prove this?  Why would she use Cresswell to marry but give maiden name of Ando on her childrens births

Mary could have married a Cresswell, been widowed and then married George Cooper; a copy of the marriage certificate should give the answer.

Link to 1891 census

Don't forget that the 75-y-old william (as a father-in-law) could also be the (second) husband of
George cooper's mother.

1881 census william (15y in 1891) is awol. who is he with?

Thanks both

I couldn't find William on a 1881 census

Couldnt' find any other marriages for an Ando - never mind to a Cresswell

I have found two other Ando/Hawkins children
Margaret in 1850 in Bridgwater
William in 1857 in Crickhowell (there is a death for a 6 year old William Ando in Wells in 1864)

On ancestry I found someone with the date of birth for Mary Ann A Cresswell of 24th September 1854 in Brynmawr (would fit with the Crickhowell birth for Mary Ando) and a date of marriage - so have messaged her asking if the A on the marriage cert stands for Ando

Hi iolas,

This may fill in some pieces....
Robert Andow married Ann Hawkins, 1836, Bristol

Margaret Ann Ando, born 1850, baptised 1 Sept 1857, Downend Glousc, d/o Robert Ando & Ann

1871 Winterbourne Clifton Glousc
William Hawkins, head, 1808, born Glous
Mary Goodal, sister, 1805, ditto
Eliza Harrison, sister, 1812, ditto
Margaret Ando, niece, 1851, Bridgewater Somerset
Emma Ando, niece, 1870, ditto
Emma Harvombe, boarder

1861 Bath Somerset
Margaret Ando, niece, 10, born Bridgewater Somerset - unclear from census to who she belongs, but no parents.

1872, Margaret Ann Ando marries Frederick Luton in Clifton Glousc.

Robert and Ann on 1841, 1881 and 1891 census.

No help with Mary Ann sadly, but there is a marriage registered for a Mary Ann Cresswell (or a Jane Ashton) to a George Cooper in Methyr Tydfil, 2qtr, 1875, Vol 11a, page 550.

Robert & Ann Ando are in Temperance St, Tormoham, Devon in 1871. He is an umbrella maker, 54 b Cannington, Somerset.  RG10/2086/81/57.

Also there (next household schedule) are a John (55) & Mary (54) Cooper, both born North Tawton, Devon - wonder whether connected to George?  Though he was born in Herefordshire according to the censuses.

Thank you, you are all stars

I've found Robert and Ann ANDOO on the 1841 census
with them are two children
Edward - born 1841 (it's on the index as AND? and I can't manage to bring it up on the gro index - vol 11 page 289 if any of you can find it to check mothers maiden name)
Eliza - born 1838 - registered as Eliza Jane HANDO - mmn Hawkins

Trish your idea of Mary Heath being Mary Ann Ando could be right, and the William G being transcribed as son, rather than grandson and the assumption of the surname does seem

I don't think the neighours are related to George - his parents are Robert and Hannah (from Hereford as well)

Jomcd - Emma Ando born 1870 is illegitamate - maybe Margarets daughter looking at their ages - and William Hawkins greatniece

Seems strange that an unmarried man adopts a child, but it all seems to add up

In 1848 Ann Ando (nee Hawkins) gets sent to prison in April 1848 (she's acquitted and released in June, but maybe that was what started to split the family up

Just above her on the 1861 census are Edward and Eliza Harrison
10 years later Eliza Harrison is given as William Hawkins sister - that seems fairly strong that we are talking about the same girl, who for some reason goes to live with her aunt

Thank you very much for those

You mention Edward Ando's death in Bridgwater Workhouse - where did you find that record? I was wondering if posssibly all the family are there on the 1861 census and thats why I can't find them

You've all been fantastic

I *think* I've found Robert's baptism in Canningham - if I'm right he's down as Hando, illeg. son of Mary baptised 1816

Just to update everyone who helped who may be interested

From Mary Ann Cresswell/George Cooper's marriage certificate

Mary Ann ANDO Creswell (so it is her), her father is down as Robert Ando Cresswell, a fishmonger
George's father is Robert Cooper, a farmer

From the 1854 birth cert Mary Ando, born Somerset Street Brynmawr on 25th September to Robert Ando and Ann Ando nee Hawkins

I believe Mary Ann's father is the Robert Ando who was baptised 1816 in Cannington, Somerset - the illegitamate son of Mary Handeo, so potentially his father may have been a Cresswell?

Its excellent you got the Certs and looks like now a lot of it is now confirmed :)

Yes it is possible that Roberts Father was a Cresswell.

Looking FreeREG ther is a JOHN/SARAH Hando/Handeo baptising children in Cannington when Mary had Robert.

On Census this John was born c 1778 Spaxton, Somerset.
He married Sarah SILK 22 Aug 1803 Canningron.

Possible Brother of Mary?

Outside chance for a Marriage for Mary??

13 September 1819, Bristol, Bristol, England
Mary HANDOE to John COTTLE

Will see what I can find re the Cottles find but Robert married Ann 1836 in Bristol.

There is this Cottle Family in Radstock, Somerset in 1851
As you have Anc. iolaus I'll type up a brief outline.

John Cottle, 25, Head, born Radstock
Clena Cottle, 20
Adelaide Julia Cottle, 1
Charles Cottle, 18, Brother
Sarah Brice, 12, Cousin
MARY Cottle, 58, Mother, Widow, born High Littleton, Somerset (1793)

JOHN was baptised 04 Sep 1825, St Nicholas, Radstock to JOHN/MARY
Fathers Occp Labourer
+
GEORGE 11 Oct 1829
CHARLES 10 Feb 1833

1841 we have;
John Cottle, 55
Mary Cottle, 45
John Cottle, 15
George Cottle, 11
Charles Cottle, 5

From Genuki;
"HIGH LITTLETON, a parish in the hundred of Chewton, county Somerset, 8 miles S.W. of Bath, its post town, and 10 S.E. of Bristol***. The parish includes the hamlet of Hallatrow. A large proportion of the people are employed in the collieries.

Aaah found a site with Records for High Littleton;
http://www.highlittletonhistory.org.uk/registers.html

Quite a few Dando entries there including;
1792 Jun 17 Mary d John DANDO & Isset

Just a possible scenario but hard to confirm if it is your Mary, Mother of Robert.

EDIT Baptism entry is also on FreeREG and John/Issets Marriage 1789

Scrap that as Mary 1793 must have died as they Bapt another Mary 1798

May help someone else in the future but looks like Mary Cottle is not yours ::)
